88 A feet of eight Nord 262s has been ordered by Lake Central Airlines, the US local-service carrier. The 262 was recently certificated by the FAA WORLD AIRLINE SURVEY . . . November 1958 to take over the domesticoperations of another Chilean carrier, CINTA which has since gone out of business. TheDC-3s are fitted with more powerful R-l 830-75 engines to improve performance from high-altitude Chilean airfields. Lake Central Airlines began operations inNovember 1949 and serves 4,300 miles of routes in eight states of the mid-central USA.The airline's network extends from Washing- ton DC and Baltimore on the east coast, toChicago, providing air service to 49 cities. The area served by the airline is highly indus-trialized. In 1964, Lake Central became the first US carrier to buy the Nord 262, which willbe used as a replacement for the airline's fleet of DC-3s. Other services connect Beirut with Teheran, Kuwait, Baghdad,Bahrain and Doha. Sabena provided technical and operational assistance but has now termi-nated all collaboration with LIA. Ex- American Airlines DC-7s were acquired in1963, and Carlos and Alphonse Arida now have a holding in Alia-Royal Jordanian. ACaravelle has Been leased from Sabena. Liberian National Airlines Inc is the successorto Liberian National Airways, the Govern- ment-owned carrier which began operationsin 1952 with services from Monrovia and Robertsfield internally and to Freetown, SierraLeone. Liberian Government invited the French independent airline UTA to take overthe management with effect from January 1, 1965. Network remains the same.Head Office: Robertsfield, Liberia. Libiavia—Nord Africa Aviazione Spa—sometimes known as NAA, Libiavia was founded in 1931 and from 1946 concentratedon airline agency work. In July 1958 the company started its own air services, and now operates over the Tripoli - Benghazi - Athensroute using DC-6Bs chartered from UTA. A Tripoli - Sebha service is also operated with achartered DC-3. Libyan Aviation was formed in 1960 to exploitthe air transport possibilities offered by the oil-exploration activities within the country.The first flight was made using a Dove on July 4 of that year. Oil exploration activitiescontinue to expand and major pipeline con- struction calls for further demands for airtransport, which is likely to entail an increase in the DC-3 fleet. Libyan Aviation is ownedby its president. Operational and technical management is in the hands of British licensedstaff. The company has developed services throughout the length of Chile andoperates over international routes to Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Panama and to Miami.During 1965 LAN is expected to order jet and turboprop equipment.
