'mer national, 27 January 1966 INDUSTRY International 139 Products Company News Great Britain BOAC Order Survival Beacons Elliott- Automation accident - survival beacons have been ordered by BOAC as standard equipment for all their aircraft. The beacon is carried in a dinghy pack and its solid-state transmitter is switched on automatically when the self-erecting aerial is extended. Transmission time is 48hr on two inter- national distress frequencies, 121.5Mc/s and 243Mc/s, and the signal is modulated by an aural tone to identify it as a distress signal. A directional attachment to the normal communica- tions set will allow rescue aircraft or ships to home on to the signal; Elliott claims successful homing on every test in recent South Pacific trials. Sub-Miniature Indicator Thorn Elec- trical Industries have produced a sub- miniature indicator light, Type 0951, for use in signalling and other equipment requiring low current consumption and long life without servicing. Mounted on the corrosion-proof body is a cylindrical lens of epoxy resin, available in six diffused colours. Metric Unit Guide As part of the British Standards Institution's educa- tional and" publicity programme for promoting the change to the metric system an explanatory booklet has been published on The Use of SI Units (PD5686).
