576 FLIGHT International, M WORLD E W S Anglo-German Helicopter Engine Bristol Siddeley Engines Ltd and MAN Turbo GmbH have agreed to manufac- ture jointly an engine suitable for medium-heavy helicopters and other pur- poses. This is primarily intended to meet British and German military require- ments and the design chosen is the American General Electric T.64 unit, which Bristol Siddeley has a licence to manufacture. The licence is also to be taken out by MAN. The Germans are believed to be look- ing at the Sikorsky S-61 and the RAF is said to favour the Boeing-Vertol Chinook. Parts for the T.64 will be built at each factory and either or both firms will assemble the complete engines. Junior Ministerial Changes The appointment of Mr Julian Snow as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Aviation was among a num- ber of Government changes announced by the Prime Minister on April 5. Mr , Snow succeeds Mr John Stonehouse, who is now Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Colonial Office. Mr Edmund Dell and Mr Shore are now joint Parliamentary Secre- taries to the Ministry of Technology. Bell X-22A Flies The Bell X-22A dual tandem, ducted- propeller tri-Service V/STOL research aircraft completed a successful first flight of ten minutes' duration on March 17. Four vertical flights were made and an altitude of 25ft was attained, during which the aircraft was rotated in azi- muth through 180°. Exports up Again The value of British air exports in February is stated by the Board of Trade to have amounted to £13,576,000, as compared with £12,219,000 in Feb- ruary 1965. Aircraft and parts accounted for £9,233,000 (complete aircraft, £5,447,000; parts, £3,786,000), engines and parts, £3,992,000, instruments £240,000 and tyres £111,000. Leading buyers were the United States (£3,974,000) and West Germany (£1,225,000). Order of Lenin for Yakovlev ' Alexander Yakovlev, the Soviet aircraft designer, has been awarded the Order of Lenin "for services in creating new air- craft." Announcing this last week Tass stated: "The history of the development of aircraft construction in the USSR is connected with the name of the 60-year old colonel-general of the Engineering and Technical Service. Under his guidance Soviet engineers have created dozens of new types of planes and heli- copters, mainly piston-engined and jet fighters and fighter-interceptors. Several international records for lifting capacity have been set up by the Yak-24 heli- copter. Doctor of Technical Sciences Yakovlev is a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences." National Gliding Championships The 1966 National Gliding Champion- ships will be opened at Lasham Gliding Centre on May 21 by Sir Stanley Rous, chairman of the Central Council for Physical Recreation. The contest will continue until May 30 (Whit Monday), with approximately 80 pilots competing in two leagues. The defending champions are John Fielden (national champion) and Arthur Doughty (standard class). RAFA Ceremony Next Sunday, April 17, a com- memorative plaque is to be unveiled at Sussexdown, the Royal Air Forces Asso- ciation's home for badly disabled ex- RAF personnel at Storrington, Sussex. It will be in a garden—behind the new wing, and known as the Eastbourne Garden—established by, and to be main- tained by, the Eastbourne branch of the RAFA. The Mayor of Eastbourne will unveil the plaque. Ready for the Roundels Britain's first Phantom, a Royal Navy YF-4K development aircraft, is ahead of schedule in the flight department at McDonnell St Louis. The Rolls-Royce Spey 25R engines are now installed and the first fiight should take place early in June
