668 FLIGHT International, 27 Apri/ 1967 SPORT AND BUSINESS The SI AT 223 Flamingo four-seat fully aerobatic trainer powered by a 160 h.b Lycoming 10-320 made a first flight on March I. Four aircraft are engaged /ii development testing. The Lufthansa training school participated in specifying the design ". . . the Effects of Alcohol" The Board of Trade report* on the Cessna 172 accident at Old Warden Aerodrome, Beds, on June 26 last year, in which the pilot and two spectators at a flying display were killed and three passengers and several other spectators seriously injured, concludes that the accident resulted from mishandling of the aircraft, with consequent loss of control, when "the skill of the pilot . . . was significantly impaired by the effects of alcohol." After take-off the Cessna climbed steeply to about 250ft, stalled and crashed sharply nose-down into the spectators' car park. There was no evidence of pre-crash failure of the air- craft, and witnesses said that the engine seemed to be on full power for the duration of the flight. The report states that the pilot's fatal injuries were probably attributable to the failure of his seat on impact and to his own failure to secure his seat belt. Of the airfield arrangements, the report remarks that take-off and landing entailed flying directly over the car park and spectator areas and left little margin of safety in the event of an engine failure during take-off. (As reported on page 630 of Flight last week, the Board of Trade has issued an information circular for the guidance of display organisers.) Reverse-thrust Sabreliner North American is planning to offer Rohr-engineered reverse-thrust systems on the P&W JT-12A-6 and -8 turbojets of its Series 40 and 60 Sabreliner business jets. This first such installation on an aircraft in this category is expected to reduce landing distances by up to 6 per cent on a dry runway, 21 per cent in the wet and up to 40 per cent on ice. The dual installation will weigh 1501b and provi- sion will be made for operation independently of the main hydraulic system and only when the mainwheels are in contact with the runway. First trials are expected to take place during September, with certification by November. SIAI-Marchetti is well advanced with the design of an entirely new two-seater for primary training. Production of the S.205 range of four-seaters with 180 h.p. and 210 h.p. powerplants and both fixed- and retractable undercarriages is proceeding •Report on the Accident to Cessna F-172-D G-ASHE at Old Warden, Aerodrome, near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire on June 26, 1%6. CAP 277. Price 2s 6d, HM Stationery Office. The first EAA Biplane to be built in the UK made its fust flight on April 3 in the hands of its constructor. The machine was the project of Mr Lewis Martin of Guernsey, who has been engaged on construction of the steel tube and fabric biplane for over three years at a cost of just under £300 at an increasing rate. A six-seat version, together with the twin S.210 development, are expected to appear at the Paris Show next month. Procaer F-480 Cobra is the designation of a four-seat version of the small Italian company's single-jet two-seat F-400 Cobra of 1960 vintage. A prototype F-480 is being built, its primary difference from the earlier machine being in the accommoda- tion arrangement—there is a four-seat cabin with car-type side door instead of a side-by-side cockpit a la military trainer. The most likely powerplant for the F-480 is the Turbomeca Marbore VI of 1,0581b thrust; the design gross weight is 4,4001b and the empty weight is expected to be 2,3001b. To achieve a good airfield performance is a difficult design problem with light jet aircraft, owing to the thrust/speed characteristics of turbojets; the F-480 designers, perhaps optimistically, expect their machine to take off in less than 1,000ft, with a landing distance of 1,400ft. A cruising speed in excess of 375 m.p.h. at 15,000ft is claimed. Hansa Jet FAA-certificated The Federal Aviation Agency on April 5 awarded the official transport-category type certificate to the HFB.32O Hansa Jet. The presentation was made in Ham- burg, Germany, by Mr James McCleery, Senior FAA Repre- sentative. The Hansa Jet was certificated in the transport category, having demonstrated that it meets all the specifications of CAR 4b, SR-422b (currently FAR Part 25).
