674 FLIGHT International, 27 April 1967 An Aloha BAC One-Eleven cabin furnished with UOP Aerotherm Zephyr II reclining seats; forward movement of the articulated pan and inner back achieves recline while permitting either back-to-back or back-to- partition mounting of the fixed outer seat backs PASSENGER SEATS . . . Filton, which is furnished with Rumbold "Slimline" double seats. Other versions of the new modular "Slim- line" are currently in production for a number of airliners, including the One- Eleven, Herald, HS.748, Caravelle, F.27, and the Boeing 700 series through to 737. The method of construction allows this seat to be easily adapted for installation in any type of aircraft, at double, triple, quadruple or even longer configurations if desired. Leg spacing can be re-aligned to match the rails, and passenger places added or removed, merely by simple workshop adjustments. The frame is constructed of welded tubu- lar magnesium alloy sections bolted to the twin forward-set light-alloy main spars. Backs, of similar construction, recline against hydraulic or mechanical locks, and are fitted with reduced-thickness foam squabs. This tourist seat, which weighs approximately 201b per place, can be used comfortably at 28in pitch. It is the sub- ject of the manufacturing and marketing agreement already mentioned, with Canadian Flight Equipment. Design and development effort is being concentrated on new materials and methods of construction, for a seat to meet the tough requirements of the major airline market's next, and most important, era. SICMA (Societe Industrielle & Commerciale R. Marshal), 7 ave Bugeaud, Paris 16e, France Transport seating and furnishing specialist for SNCF, shipping companies and airlines, SICMA (whose factory is at Issoudun, near Bourges) has developed an attractively styled lightweight seat which, although aimed specifically at the Concorde market, is suitable for all types of airliner. A 381b double reclining model designed for the Concorde by the French SICMA firm Constructed around a single front-located spar, and fitted with reclining backs with swept-under rear profiles for maximum leg- room, a double unit weighs 381b complete with folding table, and a triple 561b. S1PA (Societe Nouvelle Industrielle pour L'Aernonautique), 40 rue Jean-Jacques- Rousseau, 92 Suresnes, France SIPA, France's chief manufacturer, has produced airline seats in quantity for Caravelles, Boeing and Douglas jets, and other air- liners. A novel variant of the quick-change convertible seat uses the tray hinges as supports for light shelving laid atop the folded back squabs, to carry low-density cargo. Short Brothers & Harland Ltd, PO Box 241, Queen's Island, Belfast 3, Northern Ireland (telephone, Belfast 58444) The Mallite seat has been developed by Short Brothers & Harland from the original Fliteform "Star- lite" design. The new range of Mallite seats now being produced by Short Bros has been expanded to include special designs for the HS.748 and VFW-614, as well as for their own Skyvan. Mallite is a strong, light and durable aluminium/balsa laminate manufactured by William Mallinson Aircraft Products. Its use in seat construction, it is claimed, gives a weight saving of up to 30 per cent with- out sacrificing strength. Careful design, coupled with the properties inherent in Mal- lite, ensures that the seats, which are moun- ted on welded legs, are readily adaptable to different installations. The design for the HS.748 is a high- comfort double unit weighing less than 301b; it is stressed to 12g, as are all Short's aircraft seats. Due to be displayed at Paris next month equipping the VFW-614 cabin, the Mallite double seats designed specially for this 40-seater are fitted with reclining backs. Short's range of seats being produced for Skyvan customers include single, double and four-abreast units in Mallite, and more functional ultra-lightweight folding seats of welded tubular steel construction, weighing 101b per place; when folded and stacked vertically, they protrude no more than 4in from the cabin wall. The company's military production of seats for RAF Transport Command amounts to more than 11,000 places. One standard folding, backward-facing design, developed in co-operation with the Institute of Avia- tion Medicine, is built in double and triple units which are readily adaptable to any of the Command's transports without the need for special parts or tools. UOP Transportation Equipment Division, Bantam, Connecticut 06750, USA This Universal Oil Products company—formerly the Aerotherm Division of Aerotec Indus- tries—is another major North American volume producer of airline passenger seats and interior furnishings. UOP, having sup- plied seats to Boeing for the 747 and SST mock-ups, are preparing for the raaxi-jet era in reality, with construction of a new factory equipped with modern production plant and expanded facilities for design, research and development. Aerotherm "Zephyr II" seats, currently in service in BAC One-Elevens, Boeing 700 series, DC-8-5Os and -60s and DC-9s, FH-227s and Caravelles, have recorded' sales amounting to more than 16,600 seat places by mid-January. The One-Elevens mentioned belong to Aloha and Mohawk. Customers for the "Zephyr II" outside North America include All Nippon, Indian Airlines and SAA. A notable feature of this model is the method by which reclining is achieved with- Short Brothers' Mallite non-reclining doubk and single units in Skyvan (looking forward out the backs obtruding into the row be hind. The outer back structure remain; fixed, while the mechanical lock mechanisn allows the seat pan to slide forward ui to 4in, pulling with it the articulated bas! of the inner back. Among other advantage: claimed for this arrangement are closo fitting installations against cabin walls, ant flush mounting to partitions without thi need to allow for reclining room for sea backs. Back structures also break forward am fold flat for stowage. The rear legs of th< welded tubular chassis of the "Zephyr IF can be fitted with energy absorption unit as optional equipment. Weights quoted an 251b per place tourist, and 311b first-class. The Aerotherm Model 699 is a new de luxe double seat, weighing 801b full; equipped, which has been designed for first class accommodation in all Boeing jets an< the DC-8-60 series. "Bantam" is the narai for UOP's new Model 701, a 59lb tripli tourist seat also designed for Boeing jet: and the DC-8-60s, at pitches from 32in t< 36in. Built for comfort, safety and ease o maintenance, round a steel and aluminiun tubular structure, the seat is fitted with in dividual hydraulic-recline fold-over backs TSO-C72 flotation cushions, and visual in dicating shear-pin levers for leg attach ments. Weber Aircraft Co, 2820 Ontario Street Burbank, California, 91503, USA Comma cial aircraft interiors which include galleys toilet compartments, flight-deck furnituri and passenger lounges, as well as cabii seating, form but a part of this Walte Kidde company's varied activities. Qantas is among airlines outside th United States equipped with Weber passen ger seats, which are produced in two basi models. Model 787 is available in thro variants: as 787A and B luxury firsKlas doubles—the 751b A is slightly the mon substantial; and 787 Coach, a de-lu* double (501b) and triple (691b) tourist unj with hydraulic-recline, fold-over backs.
