(Telephone: Garston 5233) eechcraft 99 Last May Beechcraft announced plans for a big [fort in the expanding third-level scheduled service feederline mrket, in which the company had long done reasonably well with le eight-seat piston-engined Queen Air. Basis of the effort was the ntirely new twin-turboprop 15-seat Model 99, which bears a istant relationship to the smaller and pressurised A90 King Air usiness aircraft also powered by the Pratt & Whitney PT6. The rototype 99 flew in July 1966, and development is well advanced jwards certification this year. Deliveries are scheduled for next pring. The 99 is unpressurised, and designed for short rough-field peration. It is in the same class as the successful and well stablished DHC Twin Otter, but will offer a higher cruising speed. he production 99 will have a larger nose with more luggage room. eech Model 99 Data 'owerplant: two 579 e.s.h.p. By early October ive Islanders had been delivered (two to Loganair, one to Glosair md two to Jonas Arms), and services had begun. The factory at iembridge is now virtually complete and production is gathering nomentum. An output of one Islander per week is expected by the nd of this year, rising to ten per month by the end of 1968. British jovernment investment in the programme (which was launched and carried through the critical initial flight trials as a private venture) low totals £740,000 (£190,000 development contribution and £50,000 if interest-bearing loans to expand production).
