538 WORLD AIRLINE SURVEY . . . Iran National Airlines Corporation (IranAir) was founded by Government decree at the beginning of 1962, by which IranianAirways Co (Iranair), formed in December 1944, merged with Persian Air Services,which had begun operations in 1955, the new airline being wholly government-ownedafter reorganisation. The routes now extend across the Middle East from Karachi,Bombay and Kabul to Baghdad and Beirut in addition to domestic services and flightsto points in the Persian Gulf such as Kuwait, Doha, Dubai and Dhahran. Jamaica Air Services Ltd, formed in 1962as a BWIA subsidiary, was liquidated and ceased operations with effect from 15December, 1967, with the mutual consent of the Government and British West IndianAirways. The Government immediately formed a new company called Jamaica AirService (1967) Ltd, which took over the operations from 16 December, 1967, andAir Jamaica provides managerial and opera- tional assistance. One of the three Heronscontinued operating for the new company and a 748 has since been put into opera-tion, having been obtained on lease from Autair International. Japan Air Lines (JAL-Nihon Koku Kabu-shiki Kaisha) is successor to the original Japan Air Lines founded by private in-terests, and started operations m October 1951. On October 1, 1953, the new com-pany came into being with the Government holding 58% of the stock. JAL nowoperates an extensive network of inter- national, regional and domestic services topoints in Asia, North America, Middle East and Europe. With the addition of thetrans-atlantic service in March 1967 JAL is now one of the four carriers to fly com-pletely round-the-world to Tokyo; over the North Pole, westwards via the USAand eastwards through the Midtile East and India. JAL also operates a Tokyo-Moscow service in conjunction with Aero- flot, using the latter's TU-114s to whichJAL insignia have been added. Commenc- ing on September 1 a new route will beopened connecting Hong Kong, Tokyo, Vancouver, San Francisco and Mexico City.1969_ will see the opening of a new service serving Australia.
