872 FLIGHT International, 21 November I ft* Fairchild Hiller/Swearingen Metro Dornier Skyservant COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT SURVEY . . . CASA C.212 Aviocar is a twin-turboprop light transport which, like the Skyvan and the Arava, is designed with freighting and the carriage of light road vehicles very much in mind. It is being undertaken in collaboration with the German company HFB, and the immediate prospect is for an order from the Spanish military authorities to replace Ju-52s and CASA 207s. Approval has been given for the construction of two prototypes, and the first will fly during 1970. Cessna 402 is the commercial operators' version of the 401 private- owners' medium twin. It is distinguished by a more utilitarian and robust interior trim and a large double door opening for loading freight. The 402 will carry up to eight passengers on the power of twin 300 h.p. supercharged piston engines and the maximum speed is a very respectable 190kt at 10,000ft. The 401 /402 range was announced in November 1966 (it is a direct development of the more powerful 411 which dates from 1962) and more than 100 have now been built. de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter was designed to meet a long-term requirement for a small, multi-engined, short-haul passenger and general-purpose aircraft. Following careful market research the decision to go ahead was made early in 1964, and the aircraft was announced in August 1964. The entire programme was funded by the Hawker Siddeley company. There was no prototype in the accepted sense of the term, because the airframe was based on that of the single-engined Otter, and the P&W PT6 engine had proved itself in a modified Otter and in the DHC-2 Mk III Turbo- Beaver. Production of the first batch of Twin Otters began in August 1964, and the first flight was in May 1965. The C of A was granted by the US FA A in April 1966 and the first Twin Otter was delivered to the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests in July of that year. To date 151 Twin Otters have been delivered, with approximately the same number on order. Since the initial certifica- tion at 10,5001b the gross weight has been increased to 12,5001b. Among other requirements the nose has been extended to give 70 per cent more luggage capacity. From the 231st aircraft the rear baggage compartment will also be extended and the more powerful PT6A-27s fitted. Total, 154. Doraier Skyservant This aircraft is a development, for commer- cial uses, of the STOL principles exploited by Dornier in the Do27 single-engined and Do28 light-twin six-seaters. The Skyservant differs from the Do28 in having greatly increased cabin volume (encompassed in a box-like fuselage with a large double opening side-door), higher permitted operating weights and more powerful engines. The wings and their devices (leading-edge slats and double- slotted flaps), and the general arrangement of having the engines on stub wings with a fixed tailwheel-type undercarriage, follow tne company's well-proven and favoured layout. The Skyservant received German and American airworthiness certification early in 1967, and production aircraft are now being delivered. Biggest sales so far (27 aircraft on order and 50 on option) have been to the North American agents Butler Aviation. Fairchild Hiller/Swearingen Metro Last month it was announced that Fairchild Hiller and Swearingen Aircraft had joined forces to develop an entirely new aircraft designed for the rapidly growing commuter airline market. The aircraft is to be known as the Swearingen Metro. Swearingen will manufacture it and FH will take responsibility for airline marketing. FH may also build part of the aircraft under subcontract. The first prototype is being built and will fly early in 1969. Production timing is said to depend on the rate of receipt of firm orders. Although the Metro is claimed to be entirely new, it is built on the experience of the Swearingen Merlin 2A business aircraft, which it resembles in all respects except fuselage length. The narrow two-abreast cabin gives a long, slim look to the aircraft, which is aimed at achieving over 300 m.p.h. cruising speed. Handley Page Jetstream twin-Astazou feederliner business aircraft will be certificated shortly and deliveries are expected to begin straight away. Contrary to early expectations, it is the third-level commuter airline market that is accounting for the largest number of early sales. The first aircraft to be delivered to the US before the end of this year will go into service with Sun Airlines. The wide cabin, pressurisation, two-crew professional ftightdeck and systems, plus the advanced performance, are the success factors in this regard. Although the first aircraft will be certificated at a gross weight of 12,5001b, the type has been designed for up-grading to 14,0001b, and, eventually, for a 60in stretch to the fuselage for seating up to 24 passengers. Jetstream Orders: International Jetstream Corporation (for US distribution), 65 ; CSE International, 100. Israel Aircraft Industries Arava Nearing completion in Israel is the prototype general-purpose aircraft powered by two P & WPT6 turboprops. With a layout not unlike that of a scaled-down Noratlas, the Arava is very much in the same class as the Short Skyvan or the CASA Aviocar. Wind-tunnel tests were carried out by BAC in Britain, but otherwise this is an entirely IAL-sponsored and executed project. The type has undoubted military significance, but it could also have important civil potential.
