FLIGHT International, 9 January 1969 46 WORLD NEWS . . . Westland's Brunei Order The Government of Brunei has ordered a Wessex 50 Series helicopter from Westland Aircraft Ltd for use by the Brunei and Malay Regiment. It is due for delivery in the autumn of this year and will be used for liaison, troop transport and rescue duties. Boron Fibre Rotor Flight tests have begun on an Sikorsky S-61R helicopter with the tail rotor blades manufactured of advanced com posite material composed of boron and glass fibre. Said to be lighter, stronger and stiffer than metal blades, the tail rotor showed itself resistant to cracks, KNIGHTHOODS for Mr Christopher Cockerell, of Hovercraft fame, Mr R. E. Hardingham, who has just retired from the Air Registration Board after 32 years as its chief executive, and Mr Morien Morgan, Controller of Guided Weapons and Electronics, Mintech, were announced in the New Year Honours list last week. Similarly honoured is Mar coni's chairman, Mr F. Neil Sutherland. Some of those concerned directly or indirectly with aviation who have received honours are named in the following extracts from the civil categories of the various Orders. Abbreviations (familiar, but not widely understood): CB, Com mander of the Order of the Bath; CBE, OBE, MBE respectively, Knight, Com mander, Officer and Member of the Order of the British Empire. Designed and built under a company research pro gramme introduced last March, the blades are constructed of boron fila ment developed by United Aircraft Research Laboratories and produced by the Hamilton Standard Division of United Aircraft Corporation. The spar and trailing-edge strip of the blade are made of boron, the fibres being interlaced at the root for strength at the attachment point. The rest of the blade is made of translucent glass- fibre-reinforced epoxy resin. Resistance to fraoture under severe loading cases is said to be beyond expectations. Use of a nickel abrasion strip on the blade leading-edge is expected to overcome most of the erosion problem. Sikorsky is proposing to build the tailcone of the U.S. Army's CH-54A Beamont, director of flight operations. British Aircraft Corporation Ltd; D. C. Hamilton Standard has ordered 3,0001b of filament at a price quoted as $251 per pound weight, said to be largest-ever order for the material. Boron is regarded as a strong com petitor to carbon fibre, developed in Britain, which has been given much publicity recently through the investi gation into it by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Science and Technology, whose report on the subject is due to be published shortly. The boron filament is made by slowly depositing the vaporised metal on a tungsten wire at white heat and under carefully controlled conditions.
