Acquisition of the US Turolla and Plessey Airborne Corporation has broadened the group's product range. Altitude Encoder Readout Able to translate the output of any lCAO alti tude, shaft position to digital encoder into an easily read four-digit display of alti tude in feet, the Model 54 altitude en coder readout has been announced by Davidson and Hemmendinger Elec tronics, of Tatamy, Pennsylvania. Using integrated circuit logic and a proprietary static conversion technique, the Model 54 accepts the ICAO Code input as pub lished in the ARINC 532P; has a front panel test feature, and has an audio indicator which sounds at 1,000ft inter vals. Basic Processes Updated Revised leaf lets in the Civil Aircraft Inspection Procedures series issued by the Air Regis tration Board were published recently. They cover engineering drawing presen tation and interpretation; identification marking of aircraft parts; anodic oxida tion as a protective treatment for alu minium and aluminium alloys; and the installation and maintenance of fully screened high-tension ignition cables and cable harness. The leaflets are published by the Board's Technical Publications Department, Oreville House, 37 Gratton Road, Cheltenham, Glos, GL50 2BN. Electronic Devices Patented Ryan Aeronautical Co has been awarded US Government patents on three electronic devices, a transmitting antenna array used on the Ryan-built Apollo lunar module landing radar system, a sink- rate radar system, and a diode fre quency multiplier used in advanced microwave antennas. The radar transmitter antenna is a computer - designed planar array for fixed^position, multiple-beam radars. The transmitter is centre-fed by a single input, and velocity sensing and altitude sensing functions are interlaced. The antenna is employed as part of the radar system that will guide Apollo astro nauts to soft landings on the moon. The sink-rate radar system measures closure rate of an aircraft to a runway or carrier deck by reflected radar sig nals. US Navy evaluation of this 41b airborne sensor, together with its ship- The Davidson and Hemmendinger altitude encoder presents a work manlike appearance (See col one) based receiver/recorder unit, has been completed. Now designated AN/APQ- 135, the system has been successfully flown on such aircraft as the A-4, F-4 and F-8 fighters, C-130 transport, CH- 47 helicopter, and the Boeing 727 and 737 commercial jets. A small microwave device, the fre quency multiplier is used to increase the output of an advanced antenna system without increasing the input power. It can also vary the phase of the output signal independently of the input signal. Concorde Hydraulic Tests Three special HML hydraulic servicing trolleys, one for each system, were used for the hydraulicrsystem trials on Concorde 002 at Filton recently. Each trolley provides a supply of up to 22gal/min at 4,0001b/sq in. The three were fitted with commercial pumps because aireraftntype pumps were not available; but a further three trolleys, which will be used for testing and servicing production Con cordes, will have aircraft pumps with a maximum output of 31gal/imin. Each trolley—built by HML (En gineering) Ltd, of Isleworth, Middx— has its own filters and cooler as well as controls and instruments for regulating pressure, flow and temperature. A 6,0001b/sq in hand pump is included for static pressure tests. Motive power is provided by a 110 h.p. electric motor, driving through a two-speed gearbox. FLIGHT International, 9 January 1969 High speed is selected only when flows near the maximum are required; most of the time the pump runs at 70 per cent maximum speed. If very high flows are required, as when testing air brakes, two trolleys can be coupled together. In tests of a complete aircraft system the circulating fluid is drawn from the aircraft reservoir; but a 'pressurised tank is installed on the trolley so that tests can also be carried out on a sub-system isolated from the aircraft reservoir. Digital Clock Amendment In the guide to flight-deck display equipment (Flight, December 26, 1968) the Fell digital clock was described under K & S-Fell Sales (UK) Ltd. It is in fact manufactured by Fell Avionics, which is a division of A & M Fell (Manufac turing) Ltd (Newhaven, Sussex). PEOPLE AND POSTS Mr F. E. Roe has been appointed director of Resources at BAC's Preston Division. He will ensure that manpower and facilities are properly matched to current and future workloads. Mr Chester V. Braun has been elected vice-president F-4 programme manager for the McDonnell Aircraft Company, a division of McDonnell Douglas. Mr Claude Grech is now sales manger of SGS (United Kingdom) Ltd, of Aylesbury, Bucks. Mr Murray Jacobs is responsible to him as distributor co ordinator. Mr W. A. Millman, Mr A. Winstanley and Mr R. Figg, all three long-serving members of Handley Page's senior staff, retired on December 31. Mr J. A. Mcllwraith is appointed works adminis trator at Cricklewood in place of Mr Millman, who was works manager, and Mr J. McMorland is taking over Mr Winstanley's duties as education and training officer. Mr Figg was the com pany's research and development esti mator.
