LIGHT COMMERCIAL & BUSINESS The Commuter Airliner in Britain The first Beechcraft 99 Commuter Airliner to visit Europe was last week flown across the Atlantic by Captain Tom Lampitt, chief pilot of Eagle Aircraft Services, for demonstration at the Paris Show and to airlines in Britain and Europe. The demonstrations are being conducted by Eagle Aircraft Services, the Leavesden- based distributors for Beechcraft in Britain. Mr B. M. Williams, managing director of Eagle Aircraft Services, has said: "We expect to sell a large number of these aircraft and will be announcing the first order shortly." Eagle has been temporarily painting on the aircraft the names of airlines to whom it has been giving demonstrations. First name to appear was Dan-Air Jet Commuter Airlines. Over 100 Beechcraft 99s have now been delivered to some 18 different airlines in the US. and total flying now accounts for over 50,000hr. The 99 will be among several important new commuter airliners appearing at the Flight Business and Light Aviation Show at Cranfield on July 24 to 27. Southampton's Heliport A new heliport in the centre of Southampton, close to the docks and railway station, was opened by Lord Mountbatten on May 24. Aircraft from the RAF, Royal Navy, Bristow Helicopters and other companies and private owners flew in for the occasion. The heliport is operated by Twyford Moors (Helicopters) Ltd. The first of ten.Canadair CL-215 amphibious water bombers ordered for the Service National de la Protection Civile of France has been delivered to Marignane for anti-forest-fire duties. The machine is here demonstrating the dropping of 12,0001b of water over the manufacturer's Montreal airfield Jetstream Tropical A prototype Handley Page Jetstream is now engaged in tropical trials in East Africa. Scheduled to last until the end of the month, the trials are aimed at clearing the remaining restrictions on the ARB and FAA type certificates. Larzac Turbofan Runs The first test-bed running of the Snecma/Turibomeca Larzac turbofan took place on May 21 at Melun-Villaroche. The two-spool Larzac engine has a thrust of 1,045kg (2,3041b) and is the chosen engine for the projected Dassault Mini-Falcon and the Sud/Nord SN600 business air craft, as well as for projected military trainers by Breguet/ Dornier and Nord/Sud/BSlkow. With the recent joining of the tailcone, Cessna's first Fanjet S00 is well advanced in construction. First flight is expected this autumn. Production deliveries are planned for early 1972, at €590,000 basic for orders placed now.
