FLIGHT International, 12 June 1969 985 INDUSTRY International Products Company News Saab to Manufacture Spraymat Saab have signed a licence agreement with English Electric to manufacture the Spraymat electro-thermal aircraft ice protection system in Sweden. It will be produced initially for protecting the air intakes of the Saab 105. Spraymat was applied by English Electric to the pro totype and first production Saab 105 in takes, and a similarly protected intake has been successfully tested in the icing wind tunnel at Saclay in France. Data Processing for ASW Aircraft A new data-processing system for the Lockheed P-3C Orion anti-submarine warfare aircraft has been developed for the US Naval Air Systems Command by the US General Electric Co. Called AN/AYA-8, the system acts as an elec tronic translator between the general- purpose computer and the P-3C's various sub-systems. Primary function is to pro vide communications between, and opera tional control of, 25 separate items of equipment. Development of AN/AYA-8 began in 1966. and the first operational system is now being flight-tested. Equipping the WG.13 Dunlop's Avia tion Division is to supply wheels, tyres, dynamic and sprag brakes, the brake operating system and hydraulic system components for the Anglo-French WG.I3 helicopter. Dunlop have already an nounced they are manufacturing the electrical anti-icing system for the en gine intake. The company's wheels, brakes, and anti-skid system components for the Transall C-160 have now been officially flight tested and approved by the French and German authorities. The Transall is also fitted with Dunlop tyres and propeller brakes, and its de-icing systems are produced by the division in association with Usines Paulstra of Chateaudun, France. French Magnetometer for Eole The French National Centre for Space Studies has selected the Compagnie des Compteurs of Montrouge to build the three-axis attitude control magnetometer for the Eole satellite. Linearity is stated to be accurate to ±0.2 per cent, and the magnetometer covers a range from —600 to +600 milli-gauss with a consump tion of 250mW. An accuracy of better than one per cent for a range of tem peratures up to 60°C is claimed. Langley's New Cupro-nickel Alloy A new wrought alloy which has been designed to overcome the limitations of standard aluminium bronzes and cupro- nickels has been developed by Langley Alloys Ltd, of Slough, Bucks. Corrosion- resistance of this new alloy, Hiduron 191, is comparable with that of cupro- nickels; its tensile and impact strength is claimed to be better than that of aluminium bronzes and its properties unaffected by the size of section; and it is said to be virtually non-magnetic. Hiduron 191, a cupro-nickel strengthened by additions of aluminium, iron and manganese, is offered in standard bar. sections and forgings. Comprehensive application trials have been made over a period of two years during the development of the alloy. Hawker Siddeley Dynamics' new TRACE 2000, incorporating a Honeywell 316 computer, for automatic checking-out of new-generation aircraft such as the TriStar and DC-10. Some details appeared in the "Static Highlights" section of our Paris Show report last week's issue Powered flying-control units for the Hawker Siddeley Harrier being tested on a special rig at the Heston factory of Fairey Hydraulics Ltd. Fairey powered controls on the Harrier operate the ailerons and tailplane and are coupled to the reaction controi jets used when the aircraft is in the hovering mode PEOPLE AND POSTS Mr Tom Greenwood has been ap pointed commercial director of Epsylon Ltd. Dr B. W. Malpass has been appointed to the board of Formica Ltd as techni cal director. Mr John Sidney Crick has been appointed director and general manager of Precision Connectors Ltd. Mr Christopher R. Robinson has become chief engineer of Computing Devices Co Ltd, London. Mr A. D. Cowell has been made design manager in charge of adminis tration at BAC's Weybridge design office. Mr Donald Graf has been appointed resident officer, and Mr Russell Van Tuyl senior staff member flight opera tions, at the Palo Alto, Calif, office of R. Dixon Speas Associates. Mr Mark E. Bradley has been named senior executive vice-president of the Garrett Corporation, Los Angeles. Mr James V. Crawford becomes executive vice-president manufacturing and engin eering, and Mr William J. Pattison, executive vice-president sales and service.
