446 FLYING TRAINING FLIGHT International, 10 March 1969 Learning to fly for fun, for commerce, or for going to war, and how the methods of learning are changing to meet the needs of tomorrow: these are the themes of this latest "Flight" review. Three experts discuss the subject in detail, and "Flight" presents a tabulated directory, beginning below, of private-pilot flying training centres in Britain. Compilation of this list, believed to be the most complete and detailed yet published, was undertaken on our behalf by the British Light Aviation Centre's Flying Training Division. Approved commercial- pilot flying schools, tabulated on page 451, also undertake private pilot training. An explanation of the abbreviations used in the tables appears at the foot of this page. "Flight" photograph Private pilot training today By R. A. SMITH N OT HAVING BEEN INVOLVED in private pilot training in the days of the "A" Licence, I cannot speak from practical knowledge of the changes that have culminated in the many-paged doc ument that is the Private Pilot's Licence of today. A friend of mine still has his flying maps with straight lines drawn between such places as Heston and Colchester (one wonders if he geneflected to St Paul's on his way across London). I imagine, perhaps wrongly, that it was more fun to teach flying then than it is today. Yet the fundamentals, from "effects of controls" to "spinning", have not changed. But, as with many other things, changes do take place, sometimes without our really noticing. Aerodrome air traffic procedures—by rules, by lights and by radio—became progressively accepted. These are now part of the basic exer cises the pupil learns. Aircraft today are slightly more complex, but .they are probably easier to handle. What kind of thing has constituted a major change? Perhaps air "traffic control, 'Principal. Oxford Air Training School.
