In a great part of the United Kingdom it is no longer possible to send off a student on the simplest, of cross-country flights without a long and detailed brief ing.. How many private pilots today actu ally receive sufficient ground instruction from the Air Pilot to make them truly aware of every situation existing within all the Flight Information Regions, let alone in controlled airspace? It needs many, many hours of study; reading alone will not suffice—detailed persona! explanation is the only way to make the student clear as to where, when, how and with whan he may go. To complete a 150-mile cross-country by visual flight rules (VFR) is no mean task; and learning how to make the full est use of the facilities available is a much greater one. All too often one hears remarks of this kind: "Once I got my PPL, the fly ing instructors couldn't be bothered with me"; and—from an instructor—"The trouble with PPL people is that once they have their licences they never ask about anything". So all of us, British Light Aviation Centre (BLAC), included, must try to help one another. We must all be satis fied that our knowledge of what goes on in the air is adequate, whether we are using our PPL to go from A to B for fun or from B to C for business. Being adequately knowledgeable eliminates worry if things crop up that were not originally on the flight agenda. Aids and their use I often get the impression that those "real airmen" of the open-cockpit days got themselves into fewer difficulties than some people do in today's fully equipped, warm and comfortable aero planes. But this is probably understand able : so many light aircraft have so many aids that basic principles tend to be forgotten—or never really learned. Remember the definition of the word "aid"—help, assistance. Without solid piloting knowledge you can easily put yourself into a situation from which no aid can extract you. There is much to be learnt about any aircraft aid, and the teacher must know it first before he can pass on the know? ledge. He must always be at least one step ahead of his pupil. Do not let a sophisticated aircraft lull you into the belief that weather and basic knowledge are not now so important; nevertheless, aids well used will mean that going from A to B becomes a pleasure even in marginal conditions. Such knowledge is a must if one is to use an aircraft seriou sly; timetables cannot be kept or dates made if the pilot's ability is below par. • The factors we have discussed already pose questions. Is present training adequate? Do we need a more vigorous system of testing the would-be private pilot?
