On option: Eight Con corde, six Boeing SST. British United Airways Ltd was formed in July 1960 from the amalgamation of the Airwork group of comoanies with Hunting-Clan interests. In 1968, British United be came a wholly-owned subsidiary of BUA (Holdings) Ltd, whose principal stock holders are the British and Common wealth Shipping Co (92%) and Eagle Star Insurance (8%). BUA operates passenger services from Gatwick Airport, London to Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile; to East, West and Central Africa; to the Canary Islands, Gibraltar, Malaga, Rotter dam, Amsterdam. Genoa, Palma, Ibiza and Paris; and Interjet services to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast. BUA operates the Africargo service, the scheduled all-freight service between Europe and Africa. The airline also does a good deal of charter business, including numerous IT flights and the carriage of Service personnel and their families to five destinations in Germany. British West Indian Airways Ltd was a wholly owned subsidiary of BOAC until November 1, 1961, when the Trinidad Government acquired control, BOAC re taining a 10% holding. The company was originally organised in 1940 as one of the TACA group of companies. In 1947 British South American Airways acquired control of BWIA and this passed to BOAC when it took over BSAA. In 1949 BOAC took over British Caribbean Airways and merged its operations with those of BWIA. BWIA is now wholly owned by the Trinidad and Tobago Government and operates an exten sive network of services throughout the Caribbean including daily services to Miami, New York, Guyana and twice-weekly to Surinam. Bush Pilots Airways Ltd was formed in 1951 to operate charter and air ambulance flights in northern Queensland and flies charters over the whole of North and Western Queensland with bases at Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Norman- ton and Longreach. During 1957-60 a net work of scheduled routes was operated in northern Queensland. In 1967 BPA applied to operate third-level services from Cairns and Townsville. The first of 15 Twin Otters, styled DHC-6 Cable Jet by the airline, entered service on April 1, 1968, and operate over an extensive net work of routes throughout southern Cali fornia. Frequent services link Los Angeles International Airport with Burbank, Colton. Palmdale, Santa Ana, El Monte, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Ontario, Oxnard/ Ventura, Palm Springs and Lake Havasu (Arizona). Other services link Ontario and Lake Havasu with Palm Springs. During the first year of operation Cable Com muter carried more than 120,000 passengers and a new route to Fullerton is planned for the future. First flown in Decem ber 1966 fitted with two Garrett TPE-331 turbo-props, the fuselage has been leng thened by 87in, allowing 18 passengers and two crew to be carried.
