These vary in size from portable systems like Short's Tigercat to those, like the Sereb SSBS (Sol Sol Balistique Strategique) and MSBS (Mer Sol Balistique Strategique), launched respec tively from underground silos and deterrent-force submarines. Many of the weapons in course of development are not on show in either actual hardware or model form; the most dramatic contribution to the missiles sector of the display has been made by the French, as can be seen from the balance of the photographs on this page. Largely for security reasons (governmental or commercial), many missile-manufacturing companies have had to refrain from illustrating their latest projects. The United States are not showing any missiles. Nevertheless, much interesting background to developments which are afoot inevitably emerges from a show like the Paris Salon, even if informally, and one theme is that of increasing international collaboration in what is inevitably a sensitive area. For example, British Aircraft Corporation briefly describe in an outdoor display their work with the Norwegian company A/S Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk on Terne 111, a model of which is. on view, and Penguin. Terne is a short-to-medium-range anti-submarine missile system: the weapon is an unguided ballistic missile, with proximity/time/direct-action fuze, fired from a ship launcher (in destroyers, frigates or corvettes) in salvoes of six. Penguin is a later development of the same type of weapon, which fits the BAC philosophy of developing com paratively simple, cheap systems. The corporation's missile products are also represented at the Salon in Ministry of Defence Rapier and Thunderbird displays. Hawker Siddeley Dynamics, associated with Engins Matra on Mattel, are in process of studying a low-cost air-to-air weapon, Taildog, with infraired guidance and maiiaturised electronics, described colloquially as "a gun that fires round corners." In the ground-launched weapon category, Short's have announced that their man-portable Blowpipe is going to be ready for delivery, with Blowpipe trainers, by the beginning of 1971. The company also state that the first ship with the new lightweight Seacat system, the Iranian destroyer Artemis, has just been commissioned. A brief description of the Crotale surface-to-air defence system (which South Africa is buying: Flight, May 22) is dis played on the Engins Matra stand, but no hardware is shown.
