•;«•*»-«»*"»» flMWfc' AIR TRANSPORT NATIONAL TO LONDON THE winner of the competition for the Miami-London route is National Airlines. President Nixon last week set his seal of approval on the decision of the Civil Aeronautics Board in favour of National. The CAB examiner who conducted the hearing had earlier recommended that the route should go to Pan American, mainly on the grounds that it could offer an onward service from London through the medium of its own network. The application by National was, however, favoured by the CAB's Bureau of Operating Rights. In National's favour is the fact that it is Miami-based, with an extensive network of routes which will connect with the London service. National plans to offer a daily service in each direction with DC-8s, beginning on January 1. It is not yet certain whether stretched DC-8s will he used. The British airline competing with it on the route will be BOAC. MERCURE CONSTRUCTION STARTS WIND-TUNNEL tests of the Dassault Mercure short-haul jet have been completed and construction work has now started. Announcing this last week, Dassault's president. M B. C. Vallieres, said that financial participation would be in the proportions of 70 per cent by Dassault, of which four-fifths would come from the French Government, 10 per cent from Italy and 7 per cent from Spain. The remainder was still, he said, the subject of discussions with Belgium (possibly 8 per cent) and Switzerland (possibly 5 per cent). PACIFIC FARES DEADLOCK NO agreement had been reached when the IATA north/ central Pacific fares conference ended on July 22 in Los Angeles. A deadlock had apparently been caused by the insistence of Pan American on a differential structure for services on Great Circle routes from the US West Coast to Tokyo as opposed to those via Hawaii, on which PAA asked the airlines to agree to the addition of 10 per cent. Northwest also proposed fare reduction on its routes that were not acceptable to other airlines. According to Interavia Air Letter the level of bulk fares could not be resolved either. Some delegates felt that if PAA had not refused to move from its position, other work could Heading photograph The fourth BAC One-Eleven 400 for the Rumanian State airline, Tarom, landing at Wisley last week after its first flight on July 22. Tarom have ordered six 400s and three have so far been delivered have been accomplished. When the conference recessed in the early hours of Tuesday last week, all paperwork on the carriers' positions had been recorded so that the issues could be picked up again quickly when the airlines wish to do so. Another conference is unlikely, however, to be held for several months to come. FIVE 747s NOW FLYING TWO more Boeing 747s have now flown, bringing the test fleet up to the full strength of five aircraft by mid-July. The two latest were No 3, in Pan American colours—which will be used for in-flight loading surveys and has a 32ft-long nose extension to measure gusts—and No 5, the first for Trans World Airways. Meanwhile the prototype 747 had, at mid- month, logged more than 214hr in 104 flights and was then well ahead with the flutter testing which has been its principal mission. No 2, in PAA colours, had logged 103hr in 68 flights and had completed a series of high-gross-weight and other take-off tests at Edwards AFB, California, as well as auto matic landings at Oakland International. No 4, another PAA aircraft, was that flown to the Paris Show (though not in PAA markings) and had completed 67hr in 21 flights before being laid up for air-conditioning work. At July 18 the total 747 hours stood at 388. MORE 748 SALES ORDERS for six Hawker Siddeley 748s for export were announced last week. Two are for Philippine Air Lines, two for so-far-unnamed operators and two for the Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation—the sale to whom was made after demonstrations "in Nepal of the short-field performance of the 748. PAL already has ten 748s in service and two more due for delivery in the next few months.
