8 A product s (f We haven't been building airliners for some time now at Lockheed. Everybody knows that. So when we designed our product support system for the L-1011, we started with a clean piece of paper. And after talk ing to airlines we decided it was time for some innovations. In the past, the aircraft industry has usually treated product support sort of as an afterthought. Suppliers were chosen on the basis of cost, tech nical features and delivery. After that, it was every man for him- FLIGHT International, 8 January 1970 ipportexper self. Airlines were left in the middle like the shuttlecock in a badminton game. We changed that by de veloping a team concept. A total support team. We set new high performance standards for our selves and for our suppliers. And all members of the team are under contract to meet these standards. Suppliers know this right from the start, so it affects the design of parts. They know they're contracting for long-term performance and maintenance guarantees. They've each got to stand behind their products with corporate policy and finan cial commitments. The result is better hard ware.
