Top, indicative of the vast military transport fleet operated by the Soviet Air Force is this photograph token during an exercise, of Antonov An-12s. Above, nose radome and observation position of the Beriev Re-12 Mail MiG-23 (E-266) "Foxbat" (Two turbojets. each of 24,2501b approx dry, or 33,0001b with afterburning.) Although, as the E-266, this aircraft set up a 1,000km circuit record with 2,000kg of 2,320km/hr (l,252kt) in 1965, four were first seen at Domodedovo in 1967. It has since set up records for lifting 2.000kg to 98,350ft, flying a 500km circuit at 2,981.5km/hr (l,608.5kt) and a 1,000km circuit with 2,000kg at 2,920.7km/hr (l,576kt). These establish it as a formidable inter- cepter/strike type. The aircraft is unique in having two vertical tail surfaces mounted on the fuselage. Span, 40ft: length, 69ft; max speed, Mach 3. Mikoyan "Flogger" Single-engined v.g. single-seater shown at Domodedovo in 1967. Rectangular ramp side intakes feed after burning turbojet estimated lo give 30,0001b. Wing has considerable gap from tail when swept. It appears to be for the tactical strike role. Span, 50ft (urtswept); length, 57ft; speed, Mach 2.4 (all data estimated). Myasishchev iYIya-4 (201-M) "Bison" (Four 19,2001b Mikulin AM-3M turbojets). Like its companion bombers "Bear" and "Badger," which make up the main strength of the SovAF Dalnaya Aviatsiya, or Long-Range Aviation, "Bison" has been developed from its original straight strategic strike role to include radar reconnaissance. It has been similarly equipped for flight refuelling. Span, 170ft; length. 162ft; max gross 352,7501b; max speed, Mach 0.85; range, with 20,0001b stores, 2.600 n.m. Sukhoi Su-7B "Fitter" (One 15,5001b TRD 31 turbojet developing 22,0501b with afterburning.) This heavy strike fighter is in service with the East German, Czech, Polish and Egyptian air forces. A two-seat version is code-named Moujik. Span, 30ft; length, 56ft; max gross, 30,5001b; max speed, Mach 1.6. Sukhoi Su-7UTI "Moujik" (One axial-flow turbojet, developing probably 15,5001b or 22,0001b with afterburning). A single ex ample of this two-seat version of the Su-7 appeared at Domodedovo in 1967. The Su-7UTI has a distinctive bubble hood for the rear occupant. Span, 30ft; length, 56ft: gross weight, 30,0001b; max level speed, Mach 1.6. (all data estimated). Sukhoi Su-9 "Fishpot" (One 15,5001b TRD-31 turbojet developing around 22,0501b with afterburning). This large and heavy delta-wing type sharing a common fuse lage with the Su-7 swept-wing strike air craft is the standard all-weather single-seat intercepter of the SovAF. It has also been exported in limited numbers to neighbour ing Communist bloc countries. Armament includes "Alkali" radar-guided AAMs. Span, 31ft; length, 56ft including pitot; max gross, 29,0001b approx; max speed, Mach 1.8. Sukhoi Su-11 "Flagon A" (Two 15,5001b turbojets developing 22,0001b with after burning). Ten Su-lls appeared at Domo dedovo in 1967 and is in squadron service. A version with two lift engines and STOL performance (also at Domodedovo) is probably only experimental. Span, 30ft; length, 68ft; max speed, Mach 2.5 (esti mated data). Tupolev Tu-16 "Badger" (Two 20,9501b Mikulin AM-3M turbojets). The radar-equip ped strike-reconnaissance version of this Soviet strategic bomber, carrying a "Kip per" long-range stand-off air-breathing mis sile, is in wide use, "Badgers" have been exported to Egypt, Iraq and Indonesia. Span, 110ft; length, 120ft; max gross, 150,0001b approx; max speed, 510kt at 35,000ft; max range with 6,6001b stores at 417kt, 3,450 Tupolev Tu-20 "Bear B" (Four 14,750 e.s.h.p. Kuznetsov NK-12M turboprops). Developed for bombing mission, "Bear" is now largely used for strategic reconnaissance and ECM operations. For strike sorties, it carries the turbojet-driven and obsolescent "Kangaroo" stand-off missile beneath the fuselage. Span, 168ft; length, 178ft; max gross, 340,0001b approx; max speed, Mach 0.83; max range, unrefuelled, with 25,0001b bombs ati 434kt at 41,000ft, 6,775 n.m. Tupolev Tu-22 "Blinder B" (Two 19,2001b axial-flow turbojets developing 26,5001b with afterburning.) This massive long-range strike aircraft with supersonic dash capabilities is taking over from the "Badgers," "Bears" and "Bisons" of the Soviet strategic air arm. It carries a high-speed "Kitchen" stand-off missile semi-recessed beneath the fuselage. Span, 80ft; length, 130ft; max gross, 185,0001b; max speed, Mach 1.5; range, 2,600 n.m. Tupolev "Fiddler" (Two turbojets with estimated thrust of 18,0001b dry and 22,0001b
