SOYUZ SCENARIO AT 9.00 p.m. on June 1 Russia launched the eighth manned • spacecraft in the series of first-generation Soyuz space craft. Soyuz 9 was crewed by Col Andrian Nikolayev, commander (and pilot of Vostok 3 of August 11, 1962), and Vitaly Levastyanov, engineer. Once again the stated aim of the launch was very domestic—to carry out a scientific and technical research programme of the Earth and the region of space near the Earth.
