FLIGHT international, 7 January 1971 11 Us/Bragg Beware Engine Icing Information Circular No 106/1970 draws attention to the risk of induction icing in piston engines. This revision of an earlier circular has been undertaken because during the last ten years there have been 39 accidents (five fatal) in which induction icing may have been a cause. Stressing that high humidity is a prerequisite for intake icing, the circular includes the reminder that such icing can be met in ambient temperatures from 5°C to 27°C. The circular stresses two points of technique: first, that the continuous use of hot air should be avoided; and, second, that unless specihcally approved by the engine manufacturer, carburettor heat should not be used during take-off. The new Aero Commander Model 112, a four-seater with retractable gear, flew for the first time last month. Other versions are planned— one with fixed gear for production in 1972, and a twin for 1973 west of 1,800ft, 550m and one south-west by north-east of 1,500ft, 460m. There are no landing fees at present. There are plans to build a hangar and a clubhouse and at a later date an air motel and sports centre. It is also hoped to instal a 15-mile, 24km radius NDB and facilities for VDF let-down. The club hopes to be able to oiler full main tenance, fuel and hangarage for visiting aircraft within a year. Glider Design Competition The Gliding Federation of Australia and Australian Gliding Magazine have opened a design competition for a 13m sailplane. The intention is to lind a design for a good small sailplane which can be built by gliding clubs, but which will perform well enough to interest the expert competition glider pilot. Generous cash prizes are guaranteed for the winner, who will be chosen by a panel of distinguished aeronautical engineers and pilots. The best design produced will be built in prototype form by Riley Aeronautics of New South Wales. The two sponsors say that a 13m sailplane could form the basis of a new international competition class. The effect, they say, might be as important for the sport of gliding as the introduction of small yacht classes was for sailing. Entries for this design competition are invited from all interested people both in Australia and overseas. Judging will be entirely anonymous. Newcastle Training Troubles Gill Aviation is to discon tinue flying training on behalf of the Newcastle Aero Club at the end of this year. Mr Michael Gill, owner of Cli Aviation, said last week: "We have been contracted to carry out Hying training for the Aero Club since 1960. We have enjoyed working with the club, but profits in this line of aviation are marginal at the best of times, and costs have risen so greatly of late thai it has become no longer a profitable proposition." Instead Gill Aviation will continue to concentrate on its commercial air-taxi work. II already runs a Cessna Super- skymaster, a Cherokee, and delivery of a Piper Twin Comanche is expected before the end of the month. The company also acts as regional dealer for Piper Aircraft in the north-east of England. Cornish Airfield The Cornwall Flying Club now has an operational airfield, three miles north-east of Rodmin, and 600yd south of the A30 road from Bodmin to Launccstoii. There are at present two strips, one south-east by norlh- Be/ow, Captain C. L. Larson of Oslo has designed and built his own ideal trainer. Powered by a 100 h.p. Rolls-Royce Continental O-200 engine, the aircraft is a//-meta/ with retractable gear. The first fight took place on October 25 and full certification is planned for autumn next year. Maximum weight is 1,6001b, 700kg and maximum speed 140 m.p.h., 225km/hr.
