FLIGHT International, 7 January 1971 23 programmes for the M45H turbofan in conjunction with Snecma (and the West German Government), and the Viper 600 turbojet in conjunction with Fiat. Highly successful com mercial production programmes continue underway with the Spey turbofan, Viper 500 turbojet and Dart turboprop, and to lesser extents with the Gnome turboshaft and (Allison) Model 250 turboprop and turboshaft. A recent UK Government proposal of the greatest potential importance to Rolls-Royce's future concerns meetings to be held with governments from the Continent to discuss the formation of a single large European aero-engine company embracing Rolls-Royce, Snecma, MTU and possibly also Fiat's aero-engine sector. (This concept was first advocated by Rolls-Royce to its Continental partners in 1967.) Suggested initial project to be developed as a joint venture would be a "quiet engine" (corresponding presumably to the Rolls-Royce RB.220, Snecma M56, P&W STF360, NASA/GE "Quiet Engine" programme, and Japanese MITI project). Stumbling blocks are understood to include difficulties with agreeing an international legal framework for such a com pany, and Snecma's prior and clearly stated "claim" to the 20,0001b, 90kN, "European" commercial turbofan project. Representative applications: Lockheed TriStar, 3XRB.211-22B (42,0001b, 187kN). BAC One-Eleven Series 500, 2 X Spey Mk 512 DW (12,5501b, 56.9kN>. Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.l, IX Pegasus Mk 101 (19,0001b, 86.20kN). VFW 614, 2XM45H (8,1901b, 37.15kN). BAC/Aerospatiale Concorde, 4 X Olympus 593 (38,0001b 173kN). BAC Lightning F.53, 2 X Avon 300 Series (12,1001b, 54.88kN, or 15,6801b, 71.12kN, with afterburning). Hawker Siddeley HS 125 Series 3A, 2 X Viper 522 (3,3601b, 15.25kN). Westland Sea King, 2XGnome H.1400 (1,250 s.h.p.. 932kW). Westland-Aerospatiale Lynx, 2 X BS.360-07-26 (900 s.h.p., 671kW). The company was formed in 1966 to manage the development and manufacturing programmes for the Adour turbofan powering the Sepecat Jaguar strike-fighter/trainer. Production of Adour was initiated early in 1970 and builds up to large numbers this year, with some 1,000 engines on order by UK and French armed services. The Adour has also been licensed to IHI for Mitsubishi XT-2 strike-fighter/trainer, and is on offer for new UK military trainer project. Basic rating of Adour is 4,4001b, 19.96kN, rising to 6,6001b, 30.00kN, with afterburning. TURBO-UNION Turbo-Union Ltd. Headquarters: London. Public company owned 40 per cent by Rolls-Royce Ltd, 40 per cent by Motoren- und Turbinen-Union Miinchen GmbH and 20 per cent by Fiat SpA. Engaged in management control of aircraft turbine programmes. The company was formed in 1969 to manage the development and production programmes for the RB.199 turbofan powering the European multi-role combat aircraft MRCA. Constituting Europe's largest-ever military engine programme (originally calling for 3,000 engines at an overall cost of around £600 million), the RB.199 is being financed in proportion to the number of aircraft ordered by the partner countries. First run of the engine (at Rolls-Royce) is scheduled for L: Above, Rolls-Royce/Allison TF4I Spey for the LTV A-7 Corsair. Left, Rolls- Royce RB.2II—one of the West's three "big" fan engines
