iKSHIlllitllBj: 48 FLIGHT International, 14 January 1971 Flying Enstrom Activity IFR certification of the Enstrom F-28A is planned following Enstrom's acquisition by Franklin Capital Corp last month, making it the first light helicopter with IFR capability. Enstrom is to purchase the Brantly Helicopter Co shortly and it is anticipated that the five-seat Brantly will be dropped and the B-2B brought back into production. IMC Rating Guide A guide to private pilots studying for the IMC rating has been published by the BLAC from whose sales department it is available at a price of £1. The guide is produced in foolscap form and is the work of the chief instructor of one of the BLAC member flying clubs. Apart from setting out clearly the experience and test requirements for candidates the guide contains a lot of valuable advice on instrument flying technique and on how to prepare for the flight test. Instrument Flight Rules are clearly described and the guide ends with detailed instructions for the conduct of VDF and radar approaches. 1971 Cessna Revisions The major structural improve ment incorporated in the 1971 single-engined Cessna range is a new undercarriage design. Hollow spring-steel tubes are attached to the fuselage by bonded rubber bushes and the opportunity has been taken to widen the track of the 150 models to improve their basic training application. Quieter cabins are claimed by Cessna as a result of lengthening the distance from the propeller to the wind screen and altering the spinner profile. Detail changes in instrument layout and new paint schemes complete the revisions. (See December 17 issue, page 936.) Second Rallye 7 Flies The No 2 prototype Socata Rallye 7 made its first flight, lasting lhr 45min, on December 19. In effect a pre-production version, this particular aircraft is considerably modified from the first, which flew two years ago. The seven-seat aircraft is powered by a single 300 h.p. Lycoming IO-540-A giving a top speed of 186 m.p.h., 280km/hr. Maximum range and payload are 930 miles, 1,500km, and 1,9821b, 900 kg respectively. The Mace R-2 Shark which came second in the Reno semi-finals 12 days after its first flight, achieving 198.53 m.p.h. It is powered by a 100 h.p. Continental O-200A and its elliptical wing spans only 16ft but has a 5.5ft chord Relief For Radios For a trial period of one year from January 1 import duty is no longer to be levied on light weight VHF nav/com equipment suitable for general- aviation aircraft. The announcement from the Department of Trade and Industry follows negotiations led by the BLAC and is intended to encourage private owners to install sufficient radio equipment in their aircraft. The effect of the concession will be to reduce the list price of a Narco 12 set by approximately £50. Panshanger Starts Again The Panshanger flying club has re-opened under new management, operating Cessna 150s. The club hopes to obtain a four-seat tourer in the near future. HR100 Production First production version of the Avions Pierre Robin HR100 (200 h.p. Lycoming with CS unit) will be available by the end of March. Production rate is to be one aircraft a week. Ronanza Quarter Century The distinctive V-tail of the Beechcraft Bonanza passed its "silver" anniversary last month. Since the first flight on December 22, 1945, 9,748 Bonanzas have been delivered, of which 95 per cent have been of the V-tailed variety, although the conventional- tailed version was introduced as early as 1960. Although the basic lines have remained relatively unaltered, variations have stretched the fuselage and modified the wing. Internal changes, particularly, have presented almost an entirely different aircraft and radical performance improvements have raised the top speed from 184 m.p.h. to 210 m.p.h. with power increased from 165 h.p. to 285 h.p. The 750-mile range of the original Model 35 has been increased to 1,000 miles in the latest V35B and an extra 3381b added to the useful load. Then and now.
