FLIGHT International, 4 March 1971 BUM respect of the presentation of the information that the system is significantly below the planned capability. A triplicated Myriad system is at the stage of being pro grammed and it is from this that the ability to predict possible conflicts should stem. At the same time as Myriad can be brought into service, it is expected that flight in formation will be presented on alpha-numeric displays allowing individual controllers freedom to select relevant information. The first application of Myriad will be in the Middle Air Space operations room which is being fitted out at present and which will extend West Drayton's radar capability into the FIR between Flight Levels 80 and 250. Even within the operations room the degree of redun dancy built into the system is apparent. To take a simple example, each radar display can produce information based on the heads at London, Ash or Ventnor with a new instal lation at Burrington in Devon nearly in commission. The radar heads themselves are almost all duplicated. In the unlikely event of a display tube failure, the adjacent pair ing of sector controls allows continuity to be maintained by reference to the other half of the pair. Telecommuni cations are fully duplicated and in certain instances trip licated and the state of serviceability is constantly indi cated on a tote board in the system control cell. In time the system cell, which is in the main operations room, will give automated failure indication but at present the tote board information is derived from the equipment control rooms. The performance of all VORs and NDBs which constitute reporting points within the airway system is monitored as well as such domestic matters as the state of the water cooling system for the electronic racking. West Drayton has its own electricity generators and is
