756 INDUSTRY International Products Company News FLIGHT International, 27 May 1971 Tactical communications. Airborne tactical communication systems, worth £2*2 million, are to be fitted to the UK armed forces' latest strike aircraft and helicopters, by Marconi-Elliott Avionic Systems, in one of the largest single avionics contracts ever awarded to a British firm. Operating in Jaguar and Harrier aircraft and in the Puma helicopter, the systems will keep pilots in constant touch, both with forward field forces and with base control, so that they can be effectively directed when acting in ground support or reconnaissance roles. The AD1400 series equipment to be supplied on this Ministry of Avia tion Supply contract will provide, for the first time in a single system, all the short-range VHF and long-range HF communications required for this role. A facility for homing on to a VHF transmitter is also provided to guide a pilot on, for example, a supply- dropping run. The equipment de liveries will start during 1972, and will be phased to synchronise with aircraft deliveries. Melting runway ice Monsanto Co in co-operation with Air Canada and the Canadian Ministry of Transport (MOT), has developed a new runway ice control chemical, trade named WHO'S SELLING WHAT A Dynaweld 6000 electron-beam welding machine has been delivered to the Treforest (Glamorgan) plant of BOAC Engine Overhaul Ltd. The machine, supplied by Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Ltd, Hatfield, will be used in the re-aerofoiling of BOAC jet engine stator blades under an approved Rolls-Royce salvage and repair scheme. . . . El Al has placed with Deac (Great Britain) Ltd, Crew- kerne, Somerset, an initial order for one of the systems designed specifi cally to test and recharge emergency lighting in airliners. . . . SGS (UK) Ltd is supplying production quantities of a new MOS calculator kit developed for Olympia Werk AG, Germany's most advanced manufacturer of elec tronic computers. The order is valued at more than £300,000. . . . Rose- mount Engineering Co Ltd, of Bognor Regis, Sussex, announced a record half-yearly order intake of £100,000 for the export of aeronautical equip ment. The products include total tem perature sensors, temperature measur ing equipment, and pitot and pitot/ static tubes largely for Nato organisa tions. Santomelt 990 CR. Described as a high-performance organic product, it can prevent ice formation or quickly remove ice down to minus 30°C. Santomelt ice control chemical was field-tested last winter in the Montreal area. An Air Canada spokesman said: "Santomelt fully meets our require ments for aircraft material compati bility and hydrogen embrittlement. It also meets engine manufacturers' re quirements." Field and laboratory tests show San tomelt leaves no slippery surface on runways and is non-toxic. Further in formation from Monsanto House, 10-18 Victoria St, London SW1. Lightweight headset Amplivox Com munications Ltd, Wembley, announce the release of a new micro-miniature headset which they call Minilite. This is claimed to be a lightweight headset of robust construction which provides a high degree of wearer comfort with many important new features not pre viously available in headsets of this type. Minilite has a fully adjustable ear phone housing which enables the user to receive incoming signals with the earphone unit resting lightly against the ear. This feature avoids the dis comfort and irritation often associated with earplug type designs. The ear phone housing is fully adjustable in all directions to enable the earphone to operate as a miniature speaker with out physical contact. The housing ro tates through 180° to enable the head set to be used on the right- or left- hand side of the head. An acoustic-tube type of micro phone is used which has telescopic adjustment for length and also ro tates for correct positioning near the mouth. Fireproofing hose A new fire-protec tion medium, "Pyroflex," has been de veloped by Palmer Aero Products Ltd, of Edgware, London, and has been applied to their PTFE hose assemblies to overcome installational restrictions, and to meet stringent operational re quirements, on the Concorde super sonic airliner. "Pyroflex" fireproofing consists of a fire-resistant skin under a fluid and abrasion-resistant cover. The soft, rubber-like coating consists of a mix ture of elastomeric base compound, fibrous binders and a blowing agent. The base compound provides a flexible, resilient bed for the other constituents and is capable of with standing the continuous maximum operating temperature of the hose. The fibrous binders contain the ash and prevent it breaking away from the hose, and the blowing agent produces quantities of gas which ex pand the ash into an insulating cover.
