Top right, looking remarkably lifelike, the mock-up Falcon 20T feederliner. Israel's Commodore 1123 (above) is furnished ready for a demonstration tour of the United States bigger aircraft allows easy passenger access through a number of wide doors and thus dispenses with the need to use a centre aisle. Single-crew certification allows space for 17 passengers. A fully furnished Aurigny Trislander is in the static park alongside the turbocharged Islander and further examples of both types were flying frequently during the first few days of the show. Agricultural and flying-boat-hull versions of the Islander are projected, and a ski version is to be marketed soon. Shown by Bat-Air of Germany, the Swearingen Merlin III and IV are making their first appearance at Paris after making fast transatlantic delivery flights earlier in the year. Both stand high off the ground for propeller clear ance and they are well finished, but the fuselage diameter of the larger model is marginal for the comfort of 18 passengers. In marked contrast the adjacent Jetstreams provide ample headroom and the interior of the 18-seat commuter version is notably light and roomy. Jetstream Aircraft, exhibiting regrettably without the assistance of the SBAC and hence with little advance publicity, will have the Astazou 16-powered Series 200 in the flying display. Shorts are putting the emphasis on refinement and quiet ness in the latest Skyvan, shown in the colours of British Air Services subsidiary InterStoI. This version, the Skyliner, accommodates 22 passengers in a cabin which justifies the maker's claim to offer the world's first wide- bodied commuter liner. Part of the noise refinement stems from reduced propeller r.p.m. associated with the adoption of four-bladed propellers. Israel Aircraft Industries has the second Arava prototype in the static park and on the group's stand, illogically in the British Pavilion, cockpit and cabin mock-ups show the extreme width of the interior. The Arava is the only con tender at the 12,5001b, 5,670kg level to offer four-abreast seating but the design pays the penalty for its girth in reduced performance. A cruising speed of 185 m.p.h., 298km/hr coupled with a range at full load of 110 miles may limit the full potential of the market. There is no evidence that the earlier association with French interests is continuing. Making its first appearance at Paris is the Mitsubishi MU-2G of which the second production aircraft had flown from Texas. The MU-2 range, with characteristic spoiler control instead of ailerons, offers executive comfort for six passengers and is available with high-density seating in a 14-seat arrangement. The Let L-410 is shown in production form with PT6A-27 engines and capacity for up to 19 passengers. North American Rockwell has a stand and is represented in the static park by an FAA calibration Sabreliner. The company is setting up a European marketing organisation, mainly directed at the A-112 single-engined range which will enter production in October, but also to compete more fully in the executive jet market with the Sabreliner 75, scheduled for production in March 1972. Beech emphasis at the show is centred on the King Air C90 with the biggest air craft in the company's range, the Model 100, also on view. Hawker Siddeley has an HS. 125-400 in the static park and a similar flying demonstrator. Development flying is continuing on the -600 but it is unlikely to take part in any exhibitions in 1971, at least until certification is complete. Probably the most exotic business-aircraft exhibit in the show is the eight-seat Learjet 25B which is the personal transport of Aristotle Onassis. This appears in the static park alongside a 25C of the Brazilian charter operator Lider, the third aircraft of an order for four. European launching of the Cessna Citation occupies a chalet separate from the main Cessna effort. The first production Citation is about to fly and the first to reach Europe towards the end of the year will be airframe No 8. The Dassault Falcon 10 is taking part in flying demonstra tions and a mock-up fuselage is in the static show. Aero spatiale expects the second Corvette to fly before the end of the year with revised rear fuselage and tailplane geometry and certification is scheduled for 1973 with deliveries in 1974. The cause of the accident to the proto type is stated by Aerospatiale to have been aerodynamic and is fully understood.
