i-Litjn i miernauonai, 10 ieptemoer iv/i AIH TRANSPORT.. LIGHT COMMERCIAL & BUSINESS Cranfleld customer reaction At the conclusion of the Business and Light Aviation Show, a survey carried out among the 44 exhibitors, to which 31 had provided replies at the time of going to press, showed that five companies were able to report firm sales at the show while no fewer than 25 regarded enquiries received to be sufficiently serious for sales to be expected to follow. Over half the sample, 16, assessed the show worthwhile alone as a focal point for promotion and for making contacts. To the question on the show arrangements 16 said "very good, no complaints" and 14 said "good, a few minor improvements." Exhibitors were asked whether they agreed with the show policy of having no public air display; the over whelming majority, 25, supported this policy while a small proportion considered that a public display on the last day was desirable. Flight was conscious of the existing pattern of European air shows in asking whether exhibitors would support another Business and Light Aviation Show, and gave a choice of dates. The exhibitors were unanimous in their support for another show; 22 favoured September 1973, and seven preferred June or July 1972. Texas defers Metros Texas International, which had planned to introduce Swearingen Metros on its routes in early July, has deferred purchase of the aircraft. Texas is in the throes of a refinancing programme and, as this has coincided with Swearingen's own financial problems, the two companies have agreed to clarify their individual positions before reopening negotiations. Hansa Jet certification extended Supplementary certi fication of the HFB 320 Hansa Jet with CJ 610-9 engines replacing the -5 and -1 variants of earlier models has been completed. The later series engines give 3,1001b thrust, and the effect of the increase is to reduce the FAR 25 balanced field length to 4,900ft. A Garrett GTPC 30-142C APU is to become a standard item from airframe number 1056; minor changes have been made to the air-conditioning system with the introduction of the new APU. Both modifications are directed at improving the appeal of the HFB 320 for operation from hot and high airfields. Mediterranean island Islander Unitrade, a Nicosia-based company, is to start internal services in Cyprus using a Britten-Norman Islander. Trial flights were recently carried out to Aphos, on the west of the island and, subject to government approval, services will start before 1972. Twin Comanche modification The modification to the Twin Comanche, referred to in last week's Flight, page 400, introduces small flow-straighteners under the wing centre section and a short length of leading-edge strip, and is designed to improve stall behaviour and slow-speed stability. Only one British owner has had the modification effected and United Kingdom accident statistics do not indicate a need comparable to that in the United States to alter the slow-speed handling of the aircraft. Sperry distribution for CSE On the opening day of the Cranfield Show, Sperry Rand and CSE announced that the latter had been appointed distributors of Sperry flight systems for general-aviation aircraft. CSE has a Stars flight director in its Navajo demonstrator and Swissair is evaluating the system for possible installation in its advanced training aircraft operated by the Oxford Air Training School. Beech lawsuit continues The damages of $21-7 million awarded against Beech (Flight, August 12, page 248) have been set aside in the course of a review carried out by Superior Court Judge Owens of Orange County, Calif. Damages were originally apportioned between compensa tion ($4-5 million) and punitive ($17-2 million), and by agreement with the plaintiffs the former element has been reduced to $1-9 million. The judge ruled that the punitive element was excessive and might result in the annihilation of the company. A new trial is expected shortly. Skyvan data The following data should be added to the tabulated information on page 360 of Flight for September 2 for the Short Skyvan: two Garrett AiResearch TPE 331-201 of 715 e.s.h.p. Span, 64ft llin; length, 40ft; capacity, up to 18 seats; gross weight, 13,7001b; basic weight, 9,1201b; fuel capacity, 348 US gal, 293 Imp gal; take-off to 50ft, 1,050ft; max cruise speed, 201 m.p.h., 175kt; range with 4,0001b payload, 184 st miles. Moeller—itself a concern with an aviation interest. The HS.I2S is one of the Maerskair fleet If :%£.•
