14 FLIGHT International, 6 January 1972 : ; . • •. ' LIGHT COMMERCIAL & BUSINESS Cessna is increasing its aircraft production rate by 25 per cent for 1972, the company said last week. Strengthening sales and improvement in the national economy are the factors influencing the decision. The president of the com pany, Del Roskam, said that he was encouraged by the response to the 1972 models announced early in December, and especially to the projected pressurised version of the Skymaster and the 340. The Wichita workforce had been increased by 1,500 during the past eight months, and was now more or less stable at about 5,800, he added. Battle for control A district court judge's decision in the legal battle for the control of Piper Aircraft Corporation has left the Bangor Punta Corporation with a 51 per cent interest and Chris Craft with 42 per cent, according to Business Aviation. Demonstrator in Latin America A Yak-40, shipped from the USSR before Christmas, is to embark on a demonstra tion tour of Central and South America. Operations from unimproved airstrips will be featured. An order for five aircraft from Bolivia has been reported. Doubts on safety The pilot of a Westwind II (modified Beech 18) which crashed at Peoria, 111, on October 21 was passed a cloudbase of 400ft, although a helicopter pilot reported soon after the crash that it was considerably lower. The US National Transportation Safety Board dis closed this in an interim report on the accident, in which 16 people were killed. The aircraft, of Chicago & Southern Airlines, hit a power-transmission line while on final Comparable in its appointments only to the famous Air Force One, the Boeing 720B for President Chiang Kai-Shek of Taiwan is seen in these photographs. Suspension in Florida The Boston-based Executive Air lines has suspended its commuter operations in Florida, according to Business Aviation, and has taken action to negotiate with creditors under bankruptcy legislation. Some of the route network is being absorbed by Shawnee Airlines. Executive is continuing to operate its New England routes with seven Twin Otters. Its eight Beech 99s and two Convair 440s have been withdrawn, and two leased Twin Otters returned to the lessor. Air New England carried 84,700 passengers in its first year of operations. It operates two DC-3s, three Twin Otters and a Beech 99, and plans to acquire two more DC-3s shortly. Profit in the third quarter of the year was $37,000 on revenue of $775,000. Transair (Bayerischer Flugdienst), the Munich-based regional carrier, has opened a new route between Munich and St Moritz (Switzerland). The airline is already serving Innsbruck (Austria) and Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance with a DHC Twin Otter. Mountain helicopter Following trials of the Ka-26 in the Caucasus, the Moscow Institute of Civil Aviation has issued recommendations on mountain flying to pilots of the type.
