FLIGHT International, 4 January 1973 39 people will be willing to pay for the big saving in time and smoother travel. Somebody has to be first in the field and the pioneer has to bear the brunt of research while others eventually reap the benefit. But it is nice to be out in front. 33 Recreation Avenue, G. H. WESTON Harold Wood, Romford, Essex Book Review SIR,—Your perennial correspondent Mr Leslie Hunt has, in your issue of December 14, 1972, raised several points concerning your review of his recent book on Royal Auxiliary Air Force squadrons which deserve examination. The post-war squadrons were, he states, omitted because he was denied access to official histories. I believe this to be normal as a result of the Public Records Act, but it does not seem to have prevented the publication of numerous squadron histories covering the post-war years (e.g., by Macdonalds, Hilton Lacey, Beaumont and other publishers). The fact that the book is sub-titled as a history of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force could be misleading to potential readers, most of whom have to rely on your reviews in deciding whether to order a copy of any book. The number with easy access to aeronautical booksellers is limited. The Trades Descriptions Act may not apply to books but care should be taken to avoid misleading titles. The listings of movements were taken put, Mr Hunt says, as they already appear in John Rawlings's book of fighter squadrons. I recall that most Auxiliary squadrons began life as bomber squadrons and at various times were engaged in coastal, army co-operation and reconnaissance duties, so this seems an unlikely source. Please continue to review books for the information of your readers. Books are now too expensive to order blindly only to find that the contents are directed at a reader ship other than the one the title would lead one to expect. Pinner, Middx G. P.
