FLIGHT International, 18 January 1973 99 and to check their use during anti submarine and surveillance missions. In addition to the duel air-data com puters and inertial navigation systems, the equipment includes a Doppler navi gator, Omega Navigation System, UHF automatic direction-finder for sono- buoys, flight-director and a vertical camera for position fixing. Controls and displays are installed at the radar- navigator console. A cathode-ray tube display is being developed by IBM for installation on the pilot's centre instrument panel and the information which can be pre sented is listed above. Although the display will eventually be driven by the central tactical data processor, during the present tests integration has been limited and only includes the inertial navigation system. Initial trials will include the prediction of vertical and horizontal flight-paths. This display will improve the precision of tactical manoeuvres, assist descents to a sur face target from altitude and aid all- weather landings The large cabin of the 707-320C, provides sufficient room for the car riage of cargo in addition to consoles, crew stations, equipment racks and sonobuoy launch-tubes. Equipment may be removed for transportation of troops and, unlike the Nimrod and Orion, the cabin windows of the basic civil airliner have been retained. Sen sors and other equipment requiring a downward view are installed in the lower cargo bays. There have been indications that the Canadians would prefer a new all- digital electronics package designed for multi-role use and this would sug gest that both Hawker Siddeley and Lockheed will offer changes to the equipment in their aircraft in the latest submission. The decision last year by the British Government to order eight more Nimrods, and re newed interest in an airborne early warning aircraft (Flight, January 11) has ensured that the Hawker Siddeley production line will remain open.
