FLIGHT international, 7 June 1973 877 •••• •MtMtMm Around the 144 The production version of the Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic transport is a completely revised aircjaft, compared with the prototype. The cabin is laid out with a maximum of 140 seats in two tourist-class areas and one first-class section. Two galleys, marked K on the drawing at the foot of the page, and four toilets (T) will be fitted. A cloakroom will be to the left of the second entry door. The aircraft exhibited at Paris is very tastefully furnished, and the galleys are built to a high standard. Headroom in the cabin is about 6ft 4in. Blow-in doors behind the intakes on the sides and undersides of the nacelles take in extra air at low speeds, and there are scoops sticking up above the wing, surface just ahead of the secondary nozzles. These probably duct air into the nozzles to cool them and relieve base drag. Their height above the surface indicates that the Russians consider the boundary layer to be thicker at this point than is thought to be the case on Concorde. This may explain why the 144 gets away with so many domed-headed rivets around the back-end.
