POLSKIE ZAKLADY LOTNICZE Warsaw, ul. Miodowa 5. As the major Polish aero-engine establishment, PZL is engaged in the licensed manufacture of Russian piston and turboshaft engines. The former include the 1,000 h.p. Shvetsov ASh-62IR (under the PZL designation of ASz-62IR) for the Wsk-Mielec (Antonov) An-2; and the 260 h.p. Ivchenko AI-14RA for the PZL-101A Gawron and PZL-104 Wilga 35 and 40. More than 10,000 Shvetsov engines have been built by PZL. UNITED KINGDOM ALVIS BRITISH LEYLAND UK Holyhead Road, Coventry CU5 8JH. A wholly owned subsidiary of British Leyland UK, Alvis has ceased to manufacture its range of Leonides and Leonides Major radial piston engines, but continues to provide overhaul service for these units. The company also overhauls Lycoming piston engines for British Army Sioux helicopters. In all there are some 100 to 120 Alvis-powered aircraft in service worldwide, including Fairchild Huskies, Hunting Pembrokes and Provosts, Percival Princes, Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneers and Westland Whirlwinds. As many operators continue to run Alvis-powered equipment, overhaul of Leonides and Leonides Majors, at present running at around 40 per annum, could continue for some years to come. BROOKLANDS ENGINEERING Portsmouth Road, Cobham, Surrey. Although deliveries of this company's series of small Martlet piston engines ceased some ten years ago, a number of Tipsy Nippers are believed to be flying still with these units. Other applications are the Gyroflight Hornet (1 x 70 h.p. Brookland Aero Engine Mk II) and Sprite (1 x 85 h.p. Brookland Aero Engine Mk III). 10I ROLLASON AIRCRAFT AND ENGINES 29 Imperial Way, Industrial Estate, Croydon, Surrey. Rollason manufactures the Ardem 4C02 powerplant, based on a standard Volkswagen car engine, and as developed by the late M Roger Druine of Avions Roger Druine. These 45 h.p. units are for installation in Rollason-built Druine D31 Turbulents, and in Nipper Mk III and Mk IMA aircraft. In addition, Rollason has de veloped a series of 1,500cc Volkswagen derivatives, and is testing a 1,600cc engine, the Ardem Mk XI. These units are for installation in Nipper series aircraft. Ardem 1,500cc Four-cylinder, horizontal directly opposed, air- cooled. Direct drive. Normally aspirated. Bore3.27in, 83mm. Stroke 2-72in, 69mm. Displacement 1,500cc. Compression ratio 8-5:1. Fuel 100 octane. Take-off 53 h.p. at 40gal/hr, 18-2lit/hr. Height 2200in, 559mm. Width 29-50in, 750mm. Length 16-75in, 426mm. In the same 1,500cc series are the 45 h.p. Mk 4, 55 h.p. Mk 5 and 45 h.p. Mk X. Application Nipper (1 x Ardem 1,500cc). Ardem Mk XI Similar to Mk X 1,500cc engine but with increased bore of 3-365in, 85-5mm. Take-off 55 h.p., and cruise 35-5 h.p. at 2-75 ga!/hr, 12-5lit/hr. Weight 1581b, 71 -6kg. Application Nipper (1 x Ardem Mk XI). The Continental Tiara range, marketed in Europe by Rolls-Royce Motors, has some unconventional design aspects resulting in significant im provements in efficiency and power-to-weight ratio. The version shown here is the 285 h.p. Tiara 6-285 supplied by R-RM for the Robin HR.IOO/ Tiara and Siai-Marchetti S.2I0 ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) LTD Derby, Bristol and Watford. Production ceased some years ago of the numerous series of piston engines originally built by the member companies of Rolls-Royce. This followed manufacture of a quarter of a million or more Merlin, Griffon, Hercules, Centaurus, Gipsy Major and Queen, Cirrus and other engines developed by Rolls-Royce, Bristol Aeroplane, de Havilland Engine, Blackburn and Armstrong Siddeley Motors. Support for.the R-R Merlin and Griffon is today provided wholly by Scottish Aviation. R-R Bristol Engine Division and Scottish Aviation manufacture spares for the Hercules and Centaurus, and similar manufacture takes place under licence in France: overhaul is undertaken by Bristol Engine Division and at five facilities over seas. The Bristol support activities will continue at least into the 1980s. For the DH aeries of Gipsy Major and Queen 30s and 70s, manufacture of which contributed some 28,000 to the R-R total, Hants & Sussex Aviation has been appointed worldwide agent for spares distribution and product support, with an emphasis on the post-war range of Engines. R-R Small Engine Division manu factures spares as a back-up to this operation. The number of Gipsy Majors alone still in service runs into four figures. For the much smaller totals of Blackburn Cirrus Minor, Major and Bom bardier engines built and in service, Hants & Sussex holds the entire stock of spares extant.
