102 FLIGHT International. 19 July 1973 PISTON ENGINE SURVEY ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORS Light Aircraft Engine Division, Pym's Lane, Crewe, Cheshire CW1 3PL Rolls-Royce Motors, which began operations in April 1971 and became a public company in May this year, has a licence agreement with Teledyne Continental Motors, USA, for manufacturing and sales rights for the Continental range of light aircraft engines. Under this agreement R-RM currently produces the 95 h.p. C90, 100 h.p. O-200, 130 h.p. O-240 and the 145 h.p. O-300; the 210 h.p. IO-360 and TSIO-360 are to enter production at Crewe later this year. In addition the company also markets all other engines in the Continental and Continental Tiara ranges. R-RM's franchise areas, where it has primary sales rights for all Continental and R-R Continental engines, comprise Europe (except for Comincom countries), Africa, the Middle East, the Indian sub continent, Australia, New Zealand and numerous Far East countries excluding Japan. R-RM is also responsible in these areas for the provision of after-sales service. The company has sold more than 6,100 Continental engines to date, including 4,400 of its own manu facture. These statistics make R-RM the largest manufacturer of aircraft piston engines in Europe. Other products of R-RM, as well as motor cars and piston engines, include components manufac tured for aircraft gas turbines of Rolls-Royce (1971). Application Aerosport Quail (1 x 45 h.p. JLO L680R). AVCO Avco Lycoming Division, Williamsport Operations, Williamsport, Pennsylvania 17701. Lycoming is one of the "big two" in the international light aircraft engine industry, the other contender being Teledyne Continental. Judged simply on the basis of numbers of applications, Lycoming exceeds Continental in the ratio of 3:2, and its engines pre dominate in Piper aircraft while sharing Beechcraft installations roughly fifty-fifty with Continental. The third major US general- aviation manufacturer, Cessna, makes almost exclusive use of Continental engines. Lycoming has concentrated on refining and extending its range of engines—they now span 115 h.p. to 425 h.p.—and has no de velopments under way on engines of an advanced nature such as the innovative Teledyne Tiara series. 0-235 Four-cylinder horizontal directly opposed air-cooled, Direct drive.
