SIR,—Re Straight and Level in the February 7 issue, I was greatly amused to see reference made to myself as I happen to be the Mr Trimmings of Strike Command HQ who! announces himself as Chief of the Air Staff when answering the 'phone. This all started in the time of C-in-C Air Chief Marshal Sir George Wills. I wrote a ditty in the station magazine duly signing off as Chief of the Hair Staff and it caused such a giggle that it has stuck ever since. Upon the amalgamation of the commands to Strike I was presented with a crested plaque in appreciation of my services to the Heads of Bomber Command. Especially in these days of stress and turmoil it is indeed good that such a sense of humour still persists and it's great to see you perpetuating the same. I shall continue to make the usual cutting remarks and be told that I should have been a farmer with all the corny quips. 28 Westover Road, ERIC TRIMMINGS High Wycombe, Bucks The Competition Game SIR,—Most businessmen accept the realities of competition. Seldom does one meet the immaturity inherent in a "want my cake and eat it' attitude. All the more amazing there fore is the almost childish pique displayed by Mr Adam Thomson of British Caledonian. He complains that the independent airlines built up the European package holiday market, which British Airways is entering. But BCAL is entering several trunk scheduled ser^ces that were built uo by British Airways. He is critical of British Airways entering this market when the industry as a whole is far from profitable, but he sees nothing wrong with competing with British Airways on trunk scheduled services which are far from profitable. He says that British Airways "is undoubtedly going to lose a bomb," but he accepts that BCAL will lose money initially on its new scheduled services, a normal aspect of the business of launching a new product. He is desperately trying to get the Government to inter vene yet again to prop up BCAL when he says that com mercial shareholders would not back entry into an un profitable market. But the fact is that, because of the shortcomings of some sectors of the industry, British Air ways has a product that the public want to buy. This is proven by the 127 per cent increase in Sovereign bookings. Shareholders would certainly back such a prospect. How can BCAL have the unbelievable impudence to want British Airways taken off the direct route to Los Angeles "to avoid wasteful duplication," when one considers the wasteful duplication that BCAL is putting on to other British Airways routes? If British Airways is playing Mr inomson at his own game, then he has no one to blame but himself and he should be man enough to avoid such pathetic outbursts. Copperfield, BARRY MARLOW Beaconsfield, Bucks Lateral Thinking SIR,—I wonder if you would explain why the characters on CAAC Boeing 707s and Tridents do not read in the same order on both sides of the aircraft as shown in the photo graphs in Airline Profile No 45 (Flight, February 7). The characters on the Viscount do, however, appear to be consistent. 68 Spencer Road, Strawberry Hill, F. J. ESSEX Twickenham, Middx [Chinese characters are normally arranged vertically, so it makes no difference from which end one begins. New readers start here.—Ed J
