RIGHT International. 14 March 1974 327 Private Flight Bticker Jungmann plans If demand is sufficient, it is pro posed to market plans for home building of the Jungmann. They would be based on factory drawings and supplied by Carl Biicker, who produced the very large run of these highly aerobatic biplanes, and would be modified to provide for 150 h.p. Lycoming engines. The proposed price of the drawings is between $150 and $200. Those interested should contact Garth Elliot, 2nd Line West, Meadow- vale, Ontario, Canada, who is to keep the Popular Flying Association posted on this subject. Display flying regulations The Civil Aviation Authority has distributed to the various flying as sociations a letter expressing concern over the lack of legislative control over display flying. It is proposed that a 500ft minimum height be observed on such flying, unless it can be shown that the event in question can be safely performed without risk to spec tators. Exemption to this 500ft rule would be considered on application to the CAA. In order to allow time for "Notam action", to be taken, 60 days notice is suggested. Since the CAA is to become finan cially self-supporting, it may be ex pected that a charge would be made for this new service. Comments on the proposals should be made through the associations con cerned with flying displays, which will be in contact with the CAA. Private pilot fined £1,400 A flight from Barton airfield in the Manchester Control Zone to Wadding- ton in Lincolnshire led to a private pilot being fined a total of £1,400 on four summonses. He is alleged to have failed to tell Manchester ATC his flight plans, failed to give position details or obtain clearance before take-off, and using RT without a licence. He left Barton at 0730hr on June 22 and three minutes later made contact with Preston FIR giving his destination, then believing all was in order, flew out over the Pennines. He was detected on Manchester radar as an unidentified aircraft, and seen at a range of about a mile by a BAC One-Eleven captain. The pilot ad mitted that he should have notified Manchester. There was no collision risk and it can be seen that a direct course from Barton to Waddington passes more than six miles north of Manchester Airport. An appeal is being lodged. Low-priced beacon The RLB-101 rescue locator beacon is compact—3inX6inXlin—and is marketed at £47 by Singer Products Inc. The Parade, Frimley, Surrey. It is designed for mounting in the air frame, with an antenna fixed to the aircraft skin, and a 5g forward impact will initiate transmission on 121-5MHz and 243MHz, the international distress frequencies. The unit can be removed from the aircraft if the pilot elects to leave, and hand carried, using a further antenna for continued trans mission. Weight is 24oz, which in cludes lithium batteries giving a range of over 100 miles and an operating life of 48hr. Balloonist lost The US Defence Dapartment is giving up its search for Col Thomas Gatch, who left Harrisburg, Pennsyl vania on February 18 on an attempt to cross the Atlantic at jet-stream height. He is said to have been sighted over the Canary Islands and then by a merchant ship on February 21, 1,000 miles south of the Canaries, but there seems to be some doubt over both of these reports.
