iifilliiiiiiS v\ * 588 FLIGHT International. 9 May /97-f MMM bw^WII One of the 30-plus Viscounts operated by the Regional Division of British Airways refuels at Heathrow prior to operating a Luxembourg service. In terms of passengers and revenue the division is where BEA was ten years ago, but with a staff of only 3,000. In March 1964 BEA had a staff of 17,108— and owned the Viscount AIR TRANSPORT AIR FRANCE FROM THE PROVINCES THE traffic growth on the routes operated by Air France between the French provinces and London is greater than on the more well known trunk routes between Paris, London and Manchester. Fourteen French cities, other than Paris, are now linked to London and new destinations this year include Nantes, Quimper, Rennes and Biarritz. It would be easier for the carrier to operate From Paris to British regional destinations, but in the event the route structure has not developed this way. There is close co operation with the French regional carriers. The Dinard- London and Rennes-London sectors are operated by a Rousseau Aviation HS.748 and Nord 262s link Quimper with London. Last year 159,600 passengers flew on the provincial routes—an increase of 23 1 per cent. The fastest growth was recorded between Dinard and London, where traffic increased by 298 per cent and between Toulouse and Bordeaux and London, where traffic grew by 41 per cent. DAN-AIR AND BCAL JOINT TIMETABLE DAN-AIR and BCAL are mounting a co-operative publicity effort for the former's new Gatwick-Newcastle route, and a joint timetable is to be published shortly. This possibly unique arrangement, BCAL hopes, will channel a part of the rapidly growing north-eastern market on to its expand ing international services from Gatwick. When Dan-Air's fourth 727-100 enters service next month, One-Elevens will become available to replace the Comet 4B now used on Gatwick-Newcastle and the HS.748 on Luton - Leeds/Bradford - Glasgow. CONTINENTAL'S PROFIT DOWN . . . CONTINENTAL AIRLINES' profit in 1973 was 42 per cent lower than that for 1972, at $5-335 million. The number of scheduled-service seat-miles produced increased by 13-8 per cent to 11-962 million and the number of scheduled-service passenger-miles generated increased by 7-5 per cent to 5-661 million. Load factor declined by 5-5 points to 48-4 per cent. Continental Airlines has now decided, as a result of the fuel crisis, to standardise its fleet on two types of aircraft, the DC-10 and the Boeing 727-200. The carrier's four Boeing 747s are, therefore, up for sale. Operating expenses in 1973 were $374 million, up 13 per cent. . . . BUT OTHER CARRIERS REPORT PROFITS UP DELTA, Southern, Piedmont, and Western all recently reported their operating revenues and expenses—and profits—for the first three months of 1974. Delta made a net profit of $61-57 million on a revenue of $884-2 million compared with profits of $45-15 million on a revenue of $763-54 million in the same period of 1973. Both periods included contributions from the sale of aircraft while the 1974 revenue includes a debit of $1-5 million for pre- operating costs of the TriStar. In the first quarter of 1974, Southern showed a profit of $767,033 compared with a loss of $1-11 million; Piedmont a profit of $223,578 against a loss of $1-55 million and Western a profit of $7-7 million compared with a profit of $2-8 million. Data collected by the American Civil Aeronautics Board show the steep rise in fuel prices since the second quarter of 1973. There are a number of surprising discrepancies between the prices in passenger areas and cargo areas—the biggest rise in the former being on the North Atlantic; in the latter it is on the North and Mid-Pacific JET FUEL PRICES ON INTERNATIONAL SERVICES Fuel prices US c/US gal Passenger Areas North - South America North - Central America North Atlantic Mid-Atlantic South Atlantic Europe- Northern Africa Europe - Southern Africa Europe- Middle East Local Europe Europe - Far East/Australia Local Far East/South-west Pacific North and Mid-Pacific South Pacific Cargo Areas North Atlantic Europe-Northern Africa Europe - Southern Africa Europe - Middle East Local Europe Europe - Far East North and Mid-Pacific Average April- June 1973 14-6 13-9 13-3 14-4 15-9 189 17-7 16-0 13-8 14-8 130 13-2 14-1 133 24-9 25-2 13-6 13-9 15-2 11 -5 Estimated average January - March 1974 32 3 29-9 36-1 36 1 38-2 39-9 41 0 34-3 37-1 35-9 26-3 28-4 320 34-4 56-2 46-9 27-2 36-2 38-6 43-9 Increase % 121 115 171 151 140 111 132 114 169 143 102 115 127 159 125 86 100 160 145 282 Required revenue increase % 15 12 21 18 19 13 20 14 14 17 10 13 14 20 24 18 14 13 31 42 Recovery of price increase Revenue increase % over second quarter 1973 to cover 10% increase in fuel price 0-8 1-2 10 1-1 1-1 1-3 1-8 2-1 1-5 0-8 1-8 1-5
