Alfa Romeo engages in motor-vehicle manu facture and aero-engine manufacture and overhaul. Company assets L832,427 million, £536 million, and employees 41,500. Company turnover in 1973 up to L478,013 million, £307-8 million, of which aero-engine work represented approximately L30,000 million, £19*3 million. Aviation Division employees approximately 1,400. Alfa Romeo suffered difficulties in 1973 on its main vehicle manufacturing activities, resulting in a loss of LI,087 million, £700,000. Its major aero-engine activity is overhaul of a wide variety of commercial and military engines. In addition the company licence-manufactures General Electric J85-GE-13A turbojets for the Aeritalia G.91Y and, together with Fiat, partici pates in licence-manufactureof the same US company's J79-GE-19 turbojets. Deliveries of the J85 were scheduled to have been completed last year, and manufacture of the J79 is likely to cease this year. Alfa Romeo also manufactures components for the J79-GE-1K and -11A, the General Electric CF6 and T58-GE-3 and -10, and the Rolls-Royce (1971) Dart and Gnome. Develop ment programmes in which Alfa Romeo is, or will be, participating include the Turbo-Union RB.199-34R (via Fiat) and the Pratt & Whitney JT10D (together with Fiat via a new joint company). Alfa Romeo was also a partner in the proposed three- company consortium to develop and manufacture the Rolls- Royce EPM 600 and ESM 600 turboprop and turboshaft engines, which were terminated in August last year. ATLAS (South Africa) Atlas Aircraft Corporation of South Africa (Pty) Ltd. Head quarters: PO Box 11, Atlas Road, Kempton Park, Transvaal. Tel: Kempton Park 975-9111. Subsidiary company of State-owned Armaments Development and Production Corporation of South Africa Ltd. Atlas engages in aircraft and aero-engine licensed manufacture. As South Africa's sole aero-engine concern, Atlas has until recently manufactured Rolls-Royce (1971) Viper 11 turbojets (under sub-licence from Piaggio) for Atlas-built Aermacchi MB.326M trainer/light attack aircraft. Last year Atlas was to have participated in joint manufacture with Aermacchi of more than 100 MB.326K close-support/trainer aircraft initially powered by the Viper 540, later to be retrofitted with the Rolls Royce (1971)/ Fiat Viper 632-43. This higher-thrust version of the turbojet may be sub-licence-built by Atlas via Fiat. AVCO LYCOMING (USA) Avco Lycoming Engine Group, Avco Corporation. Headquarters: 550 South Main Street, Stratford, Connecticut 06497. Tel: (203) 378 8211. Group of a public corporation engaged in financial services, recreation and land development, and engineering products and research, including manufacture of aero- and non-aero turbine and piston engines. Corporate assets $1,412 million, £608 million, and employees 30,000. Corporate turnover in 1973 up to $670 million, £289 million. Employees of Avco Lycoming Division (engaged in turbine work) approximately 4,600. Avco Corporation in October last year announced the formation of the Avco Lycoming Engine Group comprising the Avco Lycoming Stratford Division, world's leading manufacturer of turbines for helicopters, and the Avco Lycoming Williamsport Division, one of America's two leading aircraft piston-engine manufacturers. Each Division continues its traditional activities under its own general manager, but by combining the top manage ment of both it is intended that the new group will be able to take better advantage of the Williamsport Division's worldwide experience in commercial engine sales and support. With the Stratford Division now expanding its civil engine range (via the ALF502, LTS101 and LTP101) after many years' emphasis on military turboshafts, the new organisation appears set to capi talise on the very extensive international contacts of the Williams port Division with aircraft manufacturers and operators. Total aero-engine business by the two Divisions constitutes a major part of Avco's turnover; at the end of 1973, approximately 80 per cent of the corporate backlog represented orders for aircraft engines and structures. ALF502 (F102) Geared two-shaft turbofan. First run as a complete unit in June 1971, the ALF502 is a derated commercial version of the 7,0001b-thrust F102 military turbofan (see below under F102). The engine embodies the gas-generator section of the T55-L-11B (LTC4B-12) turboshaft as its core, and is under development for a number of new commercial projects, in par ticular twin jet business aircraft. Its prime application in the Hawker Siddeley HS.146 four-engined short-haul transport was terminated last autumn because of rapid and excessive cost escalation in British industry. On December 9 the British Gov ernment announced that the project had been shelved. The only other active installation is the Dassault-Breguet Falcon 30, which is now flying and is planned to enter service in 1977. Sixteen ALF502s had been built by early 1974 to partici pate in the development programme. Certification of the turbofan will be completed during next year. The Avco Lycoming Overseas Corporation was established last year to administer the commercial arrangements for the ALF502. Applications and projects: Dassault-Breguet Falcon 30 and 40 (2 X 6,5001b ALF502D); Fokker-VFW P305 Commuter (2 X ALF- 502); Grumman American Aviation G-159A (2XALF502); Hawker Siddeley HS.146 (4 X 6,5001b ALF502H); HS.748 project (2 X ALF502); Lockheed Stol Buffalo project (4 x ALF- 502). ALF502-D Single-stage gear-driven fan and 1-p compressor, seven-stage h-p compressor, annular reverse-flow combustor, two-stage h-p and 1-p turbines. Take-off thrust 6,5001b, bypass ratio 6:1; pressure ratio 10-7:1; mass flow 2401b/sec; length 56-8in; width 41-5in; height 49-5in; weight 1,2001b. F102 (ALF502) Geared two-shaft turbofan. Losing entry in the USAF's AX. close-support aircraft competition, the F102 flew in the Northrop A-9A in May 1972 and continued develop ment into 1973. The two A-9A prototypes have been loaned to Nasa for various flight-test programmes. Basic rating of the YF102-LD-100 (ALF502A) was 7,2001b, with an eventual military qualification rating of 7,8601b. L1C1 Company designation (variously as LTC1B, LTC1K, LTC1S) for T53"turboprop/turboshaft. LTC4 Company designation (variously as LTC4B, LTC4R) for T55 turboprop/turboshaft. LTC4V Free-turbine two-shaft turboprop and turboshaft. An advanced design for a compact, low-consumption, low-specific- weight engine which has been under development by Lycoming since 1968, so far without an application. The LTC4V-1 turboshaft development version is rated at 5,103 e.h.p. for an s.f.c. of 0-411b/h.p./hr, and the projected LTC4V-4 at 10,206 e.h.p. for a similar s.f.c. Weights are only 5701b and 1,4801b respectively. The series has potential use as a core engine for ALF502 deri vatives. LTP101 Free-turbine two-shaft turboprop. Go-ahead for development of the turboprop variant of the LTS101 turboshaft (see below) was announced by Lycoming in August last year, and -was immediately followed by the signing of .three orders for 96 engines totalling more than $3-3 million, £1-4 million. First run of the 610 e.h.p. LTP101 was scheduled for late 1974, with pre-production units to start delivery during this year. FAA certification is planned for March 1976, and production deliveries will begin around the middle of\he year. Proposed installations include retrofitting to existing aircraft, and in new aircraft purchased direct from airframe manufacturers. As with the LTS101, the aim is low specific price, at about $55 per horse power, and the unit is of modular design. Configuration is the same as that of the LTS101, but with the addition of propeller and propeller-gearbox modules. Length 36-65in; width 21in; height 19-4in; weight 2901b.
