250 THIRD-LEVEL AIRLINES AirWest Airlines Ltd operates regular scheduled services with float-equipped Twin Otters from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria, Nanaimo and Duncan, as well as services from Van couver International Airport to Texada Island and Nanaimo (Cassidy) Airports, all in British Columbia. Charter work in western Canada and the United States is also undertaken. Elkhart/ Goshen, Kokomo / Logansport / Peru, Battle Creek, Detroit, Chicago, Apple-ton/Neenah/Menasha, Wausau/Stevens Point and the twin cities of Minneapolis/ St Paul. Alas del Caribe operates scheduled passenger services in the Dominican Republic between 11 points, namely Barahona, Cabo Rojo, La Romana, La Vega, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Sabana de la Mar, San Juan de la Maguana and Santiago, and there is also a "shuttle" connection between Herreira and Las Americas Airports ait Santo Domingo. Valdez is the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The company also offers charter flights and other non-scheduled services. Alaska Central Air, formerly Tanana Air Taxi Inc, was purchased by its present owners in 1968 and obtained a state scheduled certificate in August 1972. The company also offers charter and flight-school facilities from bases at Tanana and Fairbanks. Since 1969 Alaska Central Air has been providing charter air support for the Alyeska Pipeline Project. Alaska Island Air Inc operates sched uled passenger and mail services from Petersburg to a number of points in south-eastern Alaska including Duncan Canal, Kake and Saginaw Bay. There are three flights a week to Duncan Canal and Kake, and one flight every two weeks to Saginaw Bay. Charter ser vices are also offered. Alaska Island Air was certificated on September 8, 1964. Alaska Southcoast Airways operates scheduled passenger services between Annette Island Airport and Ketchikan Waterfront, with a flag-stop being avail able at Metlakatla. Frequency during the winter is four daily services in each direction from Monday to Saturday and two flights on Sunday, flown with Beaver and Cessna floatplanes. Alii Air Hawii Inc—see Brandt Air Alisarda SpA, originally founded in 1963 as a charter and air-taxi operator, began scheduled services in May 1966 which now link Olbia (Sardinia) with Milan, Turin, Pisa, Rome, Bologna and Cagliari, as well as with Nice on a seasonal basis. Alisarda has within the last year acquired a fleet of two Douglas DC-9 jet aircraft which excludes it from the scope of this survey. Alleg-heny Commuter is the name under which a number of independent third- level carriers, through replacement ser vice agreements, provide services to some of the smaller communities to Allegheny Airlines' route system, which the airline finds unprofitable to operate with its large jet equipment. The first commuter airline to begin replacement services for Allegheny was Henson Aviation Inc of Hagerstown, Maryland, in November 1967, with a service be tween Hagerstown and Friendship In ternational Airport, Baltimore. The list of participating airlines has since grown considerably and now includes Aero- Mech Inc (Clarksburg, West Virginia), FLIGHT International, 13 February 1975 Air North Inc (Burlington, Vermont) Atlantic City Airlines Inc (Atlantic City, New Jersey), Chautauqua Airlines (Jamestown, New York), Crown Air ways Inc (Falls Creek, Pennsylvania), Fischer Brothers Aviation Inc operating as GCS Airlines (Gallon, Ohio), Henson Aviation Inc (Hagerstown, Maryland), Pennsylvania Commuter Airlines (New Cumberland, Pennsylvania), Pocono Air lines Inc (Avoca. Pennsylvania), Ran-some Airlines Inc (Cornwell Heights, Pennsylvania), Suburban Airlines (Read^ ing, Pennsylvania) and Vercoa Air Ser vice Inc (Danville, Illinois). Allegheny Commuter services are operated in Allegheny's red, white and blue colours, mostly with Twin Otters, Beech 99s and Beech 18s. Allen Aviation Inc, also known as Allen Air Commuter, operates scheduled pas senger and cargo services from its base at the Municipal Airport, Topeka (Kan sas) to Kansas City International Air port, Missouri, at a frequency of 14 flights per day, except Saturdays. These are now flown with Lear Jets over the routes Charlotte (North Carolina)-New York, Des Moines (Iowa)-Grand Is (Nevada) - Denver (Colorado), Grand Rapids (Michigan) - Chicago / Midway Airport - Bloomington (Illinois) - St Louis (Missouri) - P e o r i a (Illinois) - Chicago O'Hare - Grand Rapids, and Milwaukee- Madison-Minneapolis .
