Air Jugoslavia is a wholly-owned sub sidiary of Jugoslav Air Transport, formed in the late 1960s to operate charter flights mainly to areas where numbers of Jugoslav emigrants are to be found, such as Australia and the USA. Air Zaire, known until October 1971 as Air Congo, was formed in June 1961 as the national airline of the Congo, since renamed Zaire. Major shareholders are the State with 80%, Institut National de Securite Social 8% and the Caisse d'Epargne du Zaire 8%; the remainder is held by other institutions. Technical assistance is provided by Pan American under contract. An extensive network of scheduled passenger and cargo ser vices is operated to domestic points from Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, together with international services to Abidjan, Libre ville, Douala, Lagos, Lome, Conakry, Dakar, Bangui, Bujumbura, Kigali, Entebbe, Nairobi, Dar-es - Salaam, Ndjamena, Athens, Rome, Geneva, Paris, Madrid, Brussels and Luanda. Alaska Airlines Inc adopted its present title in 1944, having been founded in 1937 as Star Air Lines. The present air line is an amalgam of several smaller carriers, the most recent mergers being Alaska Coastal and Cordova Airlines in 1968. Alaska Airlines operates a network of scheduled passenger and cargo routes linking the lower United States (Seattle) with Alaska, plus intra-state services to Anchorage, Fairbanks, Junea, Ketchi kan, Sitka, Wrangell, Petersburg, Yakatua, Cordova, Glacier Bay, Valdez, Nome, Unalakleet and Kotzebue. Charter flights are also undertaken. Subsidiary companies operate hotel and leisure activities including the Alyeska ski resort. During the 1960s the airline built its own airstrip at Sagwon, 350 miles north of Fairbanks, which has since become one of the busiest airports in the North Slope area of Alaska. Worldwide cargo flights are operated alongside scheduled services between Fairbanks, Sagwon and Prudhoe Bay. AIA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alaska International Industries.
