FLIGHT International, 15 May 1975 .^.V TA^-V.PCfvr LIGHT COMMERCIAL & BUSINESS Gulfstream 2 meets Part 36 The "hushkit" developed for the Gulfstream 2 was certificated by the US Federal Aviation Administration on May 2. The modification, which results from a joint programme involving Grumman American, Rolls-Royce (1971) and Rohr Industries, con sists of an acoustically treated jetpipe combined with a five-lobe nozzle. Changes have been made to operating techniques but the modification causes no degradation of performance and no alterations to the FAA flight manual or the cruise control manual are necessary. Flight tests have demonstrated a cumulative noise level nearly 6 EPNdB lower than the requirements of FAR Part 36, the overall reduction compared with the standard aircraft in the take-off case being 18-9 EPNdB. The modification will be embodied on production Gulfstream 2s from serial No 166, scheduled for delivery in July. It can be applied to existing aircraft. T t#*i An unusual transatlantic visitor to London Heathrow recently was , this Convair 580, N76Y, owned by the Great Lakes Corporation Business-jet service for Arab world Alia, the Jordanian ' airline, and Executive Jet Aviation of Columbus, Ohio, have formed a new business-jet operating company, Arab Wings, which was due to begin flying on May 10. The airline has an 80 per cent holding in the company, the remainder being , held by EJA. A fleet of three Learjets and two Falcon 20s has been bought for $4 million from EJA, which is to pro- - vide flight crews on a contract basis until locally recruited staff are available. Maintenance will be carried out by EJA at Amman but other operating bases, including Beirut, . Dhahran and other Arab cities, are under consideration. According to Alia chairman Ali Ghandour, "There is un doubtedly an urgent need for a first-class executive jet service to provide specialised services outside the normal scope of the regular carriers." Executive Jet Aviation claims to be the world's biggest jet charter service; after the sale of the aircraft to form , Arab Wings, the EJA fleet will comprise 13 Learjets, with another eight to be delivered. In addition, EJA maintains over 250 aircraft owned by other corporations. Westwind 1124 rolled out The prototype Israel Aircraft ' Industries Westwind 1124 was rolled out at Ben Gurion i airport on May 4. Powered by two Garrett TFE731-3 turbo-fans, the 1124 is expected to achieve FAA certifica tion before the end of the year. See photograph, World News, page 781. 787 Altimeter reminder The British Civil Aviation Authority has again drawn the attention of pilots to the danger of misreading a three-pointer altimeter. Information Circular 65/1975 observes that errors in altimeter reading are most likely to be made when routine scanning of the instrument panel has been interrupted; if the interruption occurs during climb or descent, the height, when scanning resumes, may be very different from that anticipated. Weight and balance warning During the five-year period from 1969 to 1973 there were 213 accidents to general- aviation aircraft in the United States in which weight and balance were factors, according to the US National Trans portation Safety Board. In these accidents 273 people were killed and 115 seriously injured. The NTSB has called on the Federal Aviation Administration to launch an education programme to impress on all pilots the need to check the correct loading of aircraft. The NTSB, for its part in the programme, has published a booklet* setting out the first principles of aircraft weight and balance and listing some of the significant general-aviation accidents in this category. A typical example cited is the Cessna 421 which crashed after take-off into known icing conditions; it was found to have been loaded to 2771b above maximum take-off weight. Launching funds for Fuji FA-300 The Japanese Develop ment Bank has granted a loan of $2 million to Fuji Heavy Industries to> help launch the FA-300. The aircraft, a joint development with Rockwell where it is known as the Commander 720, will be a pressurised, twin-engined model to carry up to eight passengers. Fuji plans to build six prototypes. Courier spares reorganised The exclusive arrangement for John Roberts to supply spare parts for the Helio Courier has been terminated and spares will now be avail able from the manufacturer, General Aircraft Corpora tion. Production of the Courier was run down during late 1974 in anticipation of the sale of the production capability to John Roberts but the sale has not materialised. General Aircraft president Robert Kimnach said on April 25 that the company has never had space, resources or intent to produce the Courier, Twin Courier and Stallion in its own facilities. The company is concentrating on its original aim of developing advanced Stol aircraft for licence production. Haywards changes to Aztec Haywards Aviation of Shoreham, a Dove operator, is to re-equip with Aztecs. One result of the change will be that, because of the lower operating weight of the Aztec, the company will no longer be required to hold a Class 7 licence from the British Civil Aviation Authority. This licence is, accord ingly, being relinquished. Severn extends to Ireland Severn Airways' Leeds-Bristol- Swansea route was extended from May 5 to include a daily flight to Cork. LDA for Paris The Lockspeiser LDA, described in Flight for April 24, is to be exhibted at the Paris Salon. The 70 per cent scale prototype of this general utility and crop- spraying aircraft will appear in the static and flying displays. Grants for Loganair The principle of Exchequer subsidies for air services in the Scottish Highlands and Islands is accepted for the first time in the Scottish Development Bill, published on April 14. Loganair has applied to the Scottish Office for financial support to maintain some of its unprofitable, but socially necessary, routes such as those in Tiree and Barra. Executive 727 conversion Air Finance International of Illinois has sold an executive 727 to an unnamed overseas buyer. The aircraft is one of a batch of second-hand machines bought from Boeing and is at present under going conversion.
