1975 - 2186.PDF
552 WORLD NEWS form a serious hazard. This latest incident again highlights the prevalence of inadequate air-freight packaging. Record Canadian engine output Canadian Pratt & Whitney produced an all-time record of 217 engines during September, the month follow ing the settlement of a 20-month-long strike. However, production had been so well maintained by the 1,300 new workers hired during the strike and the 1,000 who resigned from their union to stay at work that the previous all-time high had been reached as recently as July of this year. Production target for 1975 is a doubling of the 1,150 figure achieved in 1974 and factory capacity has been expanded correspondingly. Some 1,800 units had been produced by the end of September, 666 more than at that time in 1974. About 330 of the strik ing workers have been re-employed in the five weeks since the strike ended. All those who wish to return should be back at work by Christmas, 90 per cent of them at their old jobs and salaries. EEC changes customs rates Many of the import-duty exemptions for parts and materials imported into the European Economic Community for use in the maintenance and repair of small aircraft and helicopters weighing between two and 15 tonnes (2,2001b and 33,0001b) are to be with drawn during 1976 because it is felt that many of them are available from internal manufacturers. The import of materials needed for the manufacture aird maintenance of aircraft over 15 tonnes will continue duty-free, to the benefit of the A300, F.28, Mercure and Concorde, but requests for similar relief to cover the German VFW 614 and certain Italian light helicopters are refused. Duty remission covering the import of aircraft weighing more than 33,0001b and materials related to them continues much as before. Rolls-Royce name change The name of the Rolls-Royce Small Engine Division at Leavesden, near London, is being changed to Heli copter Engine Division in order better to reflect the nature of its operations. The division will con tinue to be managed from Derby, but its managing director, Mr David Mitchell, is to join the Derby Engine Division board. Public-transport accidents The registration of the Aerotrans- portes Entre Rios aircraft which crashed at Miami on September 27 was LV-JSY. The aircraft was a freight-converted Canadair Yukon rather than a CL-44 as first reported. The crash followed a tyre-burst during the take-off run.
