";::.~e'SM. Lockheed L1011-1 42,000 lb to 53,000 lb thrust. And little else has changed. 1972-The Rolls-Royce RB211-22 three- shaft turbofan entered service at 42,000 lb take-off thrust. 1977-The 50,000 lb thrust RB211-524 will enter service. After that will come the 53,000 lb thrust version. With the RB211, thrust growth was planned from the outset of the programme. Growth of the original engine has been achieved by normal component development, with only a small increase in turbine entry temperature and has involved no change to the external dimensions of the engine. There is no need for water injection. This carefully planned development of the RB211 has produced maximum commonality between the-22 and-524 series. Result: Substantial savings for mixed- fleet operators.
