FLIGHT international, IS January 1977 129 In fts 3lsi year the Cessna 172 receives more than a facelift. The Skyhawk 100 background) features another 10 h.p., while the new Hawk XP graduates to 195 h.p. More muscle for the 172 TWO NEW VERSIONS of the perennial 172 Skyhawk head Cessna's 1977 range of light singles. The Hawk XP has a constant-speed unit and fuel- injected 195 h.p. Continental IO-360-K —actually a 210 h.p. engine de-rated 15 h.p. by noise-reduction measures. Useful load is up to 1,0001b and a lower power loading means all-round per formance improvements, including a claimed 80 per cent cruise of 131kt. The Skyhawk 100 is 10 h.p. up on its predecessor and partly aimed at alleviating the leaded-fuel problem, with a 160 h.p. Lycoming O-320-H designed for 100-octane fuel. Among several new features shared with the XP are an optional rudder trimmer (standard on the XP), new flap switch with pre-selector detents, vernier mixture control and re-designed panel incorporating an energy-absorbing, collapsible structure. The last three items also feature on this year's 150 and Aerobat. Both of the new Sky- hawks are available in basic or "II" versions with factory-installed avionics, plus Cessna's "Nav Pac" options. More than 25,000 Skyhawks have been built since their introduction in 1956. Low-cost jet sailplane research LOCKHEED'S GEORGIA division and Mississippi State University are co operating on a joint research pro gramme with a jet-powered Caproni Calif A-21J, shown below. A radio- controlled Vscale model is also flying. The Italian-built sailplane is powered by a 2021b-thrust Microturbo TRS 18 fed by two underwing pylon-mounted tanks. An auxiliary turbine power unit mounted on top of the fuselage is planned to provide air for such experi ments as the effect of spanwise blow ing on lateral control. Other planned experiments will investigate boundary layer control, the effects of dust, insects and rain on certain wing sections, and the value of vortex diffusers for drag reduction. Total cost of the programme so far is under $250,000 and it is hoped to attract research funds from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, other government agencies or industry. Lockheed-Georgia is at Marietta, Ga, USA. Surrey—wrong number THE CORRECT telephone exchange for Fairoaks Aerodrome, Surrey, is Chobham (Woking), not Cobham as given in the airfields list iii this year's Flight Pilot's Diary. The numbers are 7300 or 7700. New life for Sandown SANDOWN airfield on the Isle of Wight has been acquired by Embassy Aviation, which plans to open it with a category C licence by this spring. Initially, the) hangar complex and run way will be reinstated, and avionics and engineering facilities will be established for singles and twins. Hangarage for private owners, self-fly hire and an aircraft sales department are among Embassy's plans for Sandown's development as a general- aviation airfield. Lindbergh anniversary tour THE Experimental Aircraft Associa tion Air Museum Foundation plans to honour the 50th anniversary of Lindbergh's 1927 New York-Paris flight. A replica of the Spirit of St Louis will repeat the 22,000-mile national tour he made after his return to the USA. • • ".
