r FLIGHT International, 12 March 1977 661 LETTERS A- P«oe 6*» where one works. It is said that in aeronautics one can multiply the British salary by 2-2J2 to obtain the American equivalent in dollars. The comparative "certification cost" ratios are about two for a single-engined aeroplane and something over three for a twin. For the same owners east and west of the Atlantic, American certification costs would seem to burn at least the same size of hole in the pocket as do the British. Perhaps the American has more disposable income left because he pays proportionally less income tax and fuel is cheaper. On that last point, it would naturally be cheaper for a Briton to fly in America, where fuel costs less than it does here. The Briton, as a foreign national, would presumably not pay American income tax either, so he would not contribute towards the costs of American regulation. Lack of PPO and other benefits are all part of the American system, or a consequence of American kindliness. America is a great-hearted country and I wish we showed half her get- up-and-go spirit. But it would be dis ingenuous to ignore the fears and misgivings of American friends who say that the spread of product liability and similar laws threatens the quality of life which they rightly cherish. If the truth as they see it shows our condition to be less severe than some people want us to believe, then I make no apology for repeating it. 40 Castle St, DARROL STINTON Farnham, Surrey Lifeboat links SIR—I would like to advise the avia tion community of the availability of VHF (AM) equipment on board the Aberdeen lifeboat, RNLB BP Forties. We carry 121-5MHz and 121-6MHz, guarding the former (callsign "Aberdeen Lifeboat") while on exercise, and using the latter as a working frequency. In service we would expect aircraft to use 121 • 5MHz to contact us, and then change over to 121-6MHz as required by operational circumstances. We always welcome test calls while on exercise, but the caller must warn the appropriate NATS emergency desk beforehand. This air-band equipment was donated by a major North Sea heli copter operator, but as we are still looking for some £90,000 to make up the cost of BP Forties, it is to be hoped that a further contribution will come from the aviation community. COXWAIN A. W.
