Dear Uncle Roger. . . . . . "No story," says you! If "Air France Concordes have completed 99-8 per cent of all scheduled flights in the first 18 months of service" (S&L, November 5), then either: • Only 0-2 per cent of scheduled flights remain before the demise of Air France's Concordes, or • 0-2 per cent never completed their flights and are still presumably air borne, or • 0-2 per cent took longer than 18 months to complete their flights. Why the doubts about Concorde's endurance? NATS, MIKE PERRY Glasgow Airport, Paisley, Renfrewshire . . . The fuselage and V12 engine shown below were spotted in El Bluff, near Bluefields on the east coast of Nicaragua. Can you, or one of your nephews, say what it is and what it's doing there? 20 Vandyke Close, PETER DIXON London SW15 3J9 . . . With reference to your whimsy about Jim Cordes and his regalia (DUR, October 8), from 1925 RAF issue flying garments were all based on the surplus 1914-18 open-cockpit/ anti-frostbite leather jackets and Sid- cot suits that had to be used up dur ing the usual defence cuts. For sum mer flying you could also draw some very drab prison-grey overalls, which were on issue to everyone from the lowliest AC2 up to any Air Marshal silly enough to want to fly. As a result, glamour-chasing pilots —and most of them were—had to pay their own money to Gieves or Brian Lewis for those splendid deb-killer white overalls. I think Jim Cordes and I must have invested at the same time, about 1934, fondly thinking that we need no longer worry about the oil from the interrupter gear of the old fighters, only to find that with the first retracting undercarriage we were sartorially doomed by a thing called hydraulic fluid. But as Jim would have said: "There was no harm in trying." GP CAPT H. J.
