Fast jets which seek out unidentified intru ders in our airspace, and intercept them. And if they're not so inno cent, escort them away. We are looking for young men capable of rising to such challenges as these-who want one of the most exciting and rewarding careers possible - as navigators in the Royal Air Force. Using the highly advanced navigational and radar equipment you've mastered in training, you'll be responsible for directing your aircraft to its target with pin-point accuracy. And then, in time of war, for releasing the correct weapon against it. That's just part of thejob. As a navigator, you'll also be responsible for electronic counter- measures to outwit enemy fighters, missiles, guns. And for the safe navi gation of your aircraft at all times. You will need to be alert to all aspects of flying, and to have a comprehensive understanding of your aircraft and its capabilities in all conditions. £ ist what kind of person are we ng for, then? We're after quick thinkers and decision makers. Men who can stay cooL calm and collected under pres sure. Men who enjoy working as part of a closely knit team. Well educated. With at least five or more GCE 'O' levels at Grade C or above (or equivalent) including English Language and Maths. 'A'levels or a degree? So much the better. If you're one of these people, if you fit the bill, we'll do the rest. You'll be airborne around two months after completion of your initial officer training. About 18 months later, as a fully fledged navi gator on a salary of at least .£4,493, you'll probably be streamed into one of four different roles. As we've described, you could be in a Phantom flying interception missions. You could be a tactical naviga tor in a Nimrod, on reconnaissance or submarine hunting missions over the Atlantic. Youcouldbeina Hercules, navi gating the aircraft in its tactical trans port role, anywhere in the world. Or you could be in a Buccaneer, one of the long-range strike aircraft of the Royal Air Force. Right now, gratuity-earning Short Service Commissions are available (for twelve years with an option to leave after eight) as well as permanent pensionable commissions. Promotion prospects are excel lent, with good opportunities to reach high rank. You can also be sponsored while you study at University or Polytechnic through our University Cadetship Scheme.
