FLIGHT International, 17 February 1979 CHIEF ENGINEER-DESIGNATE VICKERS SHIPBUILDING GROUP LIMITED - ARMAMENT DIVISION The Armament Division of Vickers Shipbuilding Group Limited at Barrow is responsible for many Ministry of Defence (Naval/Army) contracts and new projects associated with Naval Launching and Missile Handling Systems, Gunmountings and Field Equipment, etc. Preferred candidates will have a good honours degree in engineering (mechanical or electrical) and be capable of leading and controlling a large and modern technical department currently involved in several important projects. The work is varied and interesting, covering conceptual design work, drawing office work and responsibility for commissioning of modern weapons to the stringent requirements of M.O.D. Specifications. Applicants will need to demonstrate their knowledge and experience of modern engineering science and technology, both mechanical and electrical. The high standards and requirements of M.O.D. contracts cover a wide field and include:- * Cost effective designs of lightweight construction, * Theoretical study work - Finite element and dynamic responses, * Automatic control systems and logic arrangements, * High Pressure Hydraulic Engineering, * Servo system/powering arrangements, * Precision engineering techniques, * Management of technical resources. This is a senior management position and the salary on appointment will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications required. There is an excellent pension scheme and assistance with re-location expenses will be given. Barrow-in-Furness is a medium sized town situated within a short distance of the Lake District National Park and in addition, there are the usual amenities associated with a coastal area.
