* FLIGHT International, 9 June 1979 Viggen's aerodynamic configuration, -' a canard and detta-wing combina tion, is a design concept which will stay advanced for years to come. 2001 J. s This Saab innovation provides both excellent manoeuvrability and the high lift necessary for STOL performance, essential for wide aircraft dispersal and ground survival. Similar nose-wing layouts are now being tested in other countries - Viggen has long demonstrated its success. A thrust reverser, another Saab first, and an onboard digital computer to cut pilot workload are additional innovative Viggen features. The future will demand instantaneous aircraft reaction in order to counter aggression. Viggen is airborne within 30 seconds and supersonic even at low altitude in under 60 seconds. An all-altitude pulse-doppler radar, the most advanced in production in Europe, ensures that Viggen reaches its target in any weather, independent of ground control systems. Eight Viggen squadrons are now in service with the Swedish Air Force, and delivery of the new JA37 Viggen fighter for a further eight or more squadrons has recently started. Field service has proved the potency, reliability and economy of the Viggen system. A ground crew of only five refuel and rearm Viggen between missions in under 10 minutes, fast turnround maximizes aircraft utilization and fire power. Technical innovation, service- evaluated technology and low maintenance costs concur to make the Viggen the cost-effective alternative for the decades ahead.
