FLIGHT international, S January 1980 15 Winning wing gIR—With regard to Rockwell's For ward Swept Wing (FSW) project, it now appears that my ideas are at last accepted. The Hall-Warren wing possesses all the advantages claimed for the Rock well's FSW and is almost identical to it. The sole difference is the joining of the front and rear planes, which in the Hall-Warren overcomes the torsional stiffness problem without recourse to a special composite struc ture. Sea Cottage NORMAN HALL-WARREN Torcross Kingsbridge South Devon T27 Windsheer warning SIR—You asked in an article on wind- shear for readers' comments on the systems available for its measurement. At the Paris Air Show last year 1 came across a system which was being demonstrated and gave good data under difficult conditions. I commend the system as worthy of further study by those with a particular interest in windshear detection. Unlike the total energy onboard devices that are being studied, the Sodar system can tell the pilot what the wind is doing before he enters the shear and might deter him from making an approach in the first place. As a pilot I would be very in terested in an instrument that would tell me that at 300ft on finals the wind changes 180° while I am still in the relative comfort and safety of the holding pattern. 6 Onslow Lodge P.
