What's new Airtug and industrial tractor manu facturer Reliance-Mercury (Mile Cross Works, Gibbet Street, Halifax, York shire HX1 4JQ; telephone 0422 58141) is now producing aircraft tow bars, passenger steps and lifting platforms to complement its existing range, of which 70 per cent is exported. Reliance-Mercury has acquired cer tain product lines from Watergil Engineering of Keighley, Yorks. The new equipment includes tow bars for all types of civil and military aircraft and towable and self-propelled pas senger steps for all aircraft up to the Boeing 747. (The steps are mounted on Ford or Bedford chassis, and can elevate to aircraft door sills up to 18ft, a self-adjusting nose section simplifies stairs to aircraft alignment.) The lifting platform with a capacity of 250kg (5501b) can operate to heights of 10-4m (34ft) and move through almost 360°. Horizontal and vertical travel are controlled from the platform, which makes it suitable for both maintenance and de-icing. The structural design of aircraft panels is one application for a new computer program from the Engineer ing Sciences Data Unit (ESDU Marketing, 251-259 Regent Street, London W1R 7AD; telephone 01-437 4894). The new program, COMpac 1013, allows untrained engineers to perform calculations and to view im mediately the results on a Tektronix 4051 graphics computer. This elimin ates the need for recurrent, time- consuming calculations. New component overhaul facilities A comprehensive range of Bolkow BO105 helicopter components can now be maintained, overhauled, repaired and tested in the UK by Canford Air craft Equipment (Stansted Airport, Stansted, Essex; telephone 0279 815151). Bolkow hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic and safety and survival components can be handled. Overhauls have been carried out on behalf of British and European opera tors. A complete capability list has been prepared and can be supplied to BO105 operators on request. Canford's facilities were developed for Sikorsky and Bell helicopters.
